Shyam Charan Murmu (1958-2014) was an Indian bank officer, who died of cardiac arrest. He is known for being the husband of the 15th President of India, Droupadi Murmu.

Shyam Charan Murmu was born on Tuesday, 1 April 1958 (age 56 years; at the time of death) in Pahadpur Village, Badampahar (Mayurbhanj), Odisha, India. His zodiac sign is Aries. He pursued his graduation from Rama Devi College in Bhubaneswar.

Husband & Children

While Shyam was studying at Rama Devi College, he met Droupadi Murmu, who was pursuing her graduation in the same college. Initially, they became friends, and soon fell in love with each other. According to the sources, in 1980, he met Droupadi’s parents to have a conversation about his marriage with Droupadi. Reportedly, Biranchi Narayan Tudu (Droupadi’s father) rejected Shyam’s proposal and was upset with Droupadi. Later, Shyam Charan arrived at Droupadi’s home with his relatives and friends to convince Droupadi’s father to accept his marriage proposal. He even stayed there for three-four days. After convincing Droupadi’s father, Shyam and Droupadi got married in 1980. In an interview, Shyam’s uncle talked about Shyam and Droupadi’s marriage, he said,

Droupadi belongs to the Santhal tribe in which the dowry usually comes from the groom’s side, and during their marriage, it was decided that the groom’s side would give 1 bullock, 1 cow, and 16 pairs of clothes as dowry to the bride’s side. In the the marriage of Draupadi and Shyam, there was a feast of red-yellow country chicken. Then almost everywhere in marriage this was done.”

Later, Droupadi Murmu started working as a teacher. Droupadi began her political career in 1997, and on 21 July 2022, she was elected as the 15th President of India, defeating Yashwant Sinha in the 2022 Indian Presidential Elections.

In 1984, the couple was blessed with a daughter, who died when she was 3 years old. The couple then had two sons named Laxman Murmu and Sipun Murmu, and a daughter named Itishree Murmu, who works as a banker. On 25 October 2009, Laxman Murmu who used to live with his uncle and aunt died under mysterious circumstances, and on 2 January 2013, Sipun Murmu died in an accident.

Career

Shyam Charan Murmu worked as an office bearer at the Bank of India and Odisha Unit of BOIOA (Bank of India Officers’ Association). He was then transferred to the Rairangpur branch of the bank in Mayurbhanj, Odisha.

Death

On 1 August 2014, he died of cardiac arrest.
