Irfan Solanki is an Indian politician and member of the Samajwadi Party (SP) who was elected as a member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly from Sishamau in 2012, 2017, and 2022.

Haji Irfan Solanki was born on Tuesday, 5 June 1979 (age 44 years; as of 2023) in Ajmer, Rajasthan, India. His zodiac sign is Gemini. According to his Facebook profile, he did his schooling at Huddard High School in Kanpur and pursued his graduation from Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University, Kanpur. However, his profile on MyNeta states that he is a 12th pass from the City Model Inter College in Kanpur. He inherited the political legacy from his father, Haji Mushtaq Solanki, who was a two-time Samajwadi Party MLA from the Arya Nagar Assembly constituency. Following his father’s death in 2006, SP gave the ticket to Irfan to contest the 2007 assembly polls in UP from his father’s seat. Apart from his political legacy, Irfan also inherited a tannery business from his father in Kanpur.

He began his political journey as a member of the Samajwadi Party (SP) in 2007 when he won the Arya Nagar Assembly seat in UP, defeating BJP candidate Harish Matreja. In 2012, he contested and won the Sishamau Assembly seat, defeating the BJP candidate Hanuman Swarup Mishra. He was again elected as MLA from the Sishamau in the 2017 and 2022 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections.

Controversies

Booked for Misbehaving With Woman IAS Officer

On 19 June 2011, Irfan Solanki and one of his associates were arrested for allegedly misbehaving with a woman IAS officer of the State Power Department in Kanpur. On 15 June 2011, Solanki and his associates visited the office of Kanpur Electricity Supply Company managing director Ritu Maheshwari, with some complaints. When the security guards did not allow them inside, they barged into Maheshwari’s cabin and allegedly misbehaved with her. Although District Magistrate Hari Om intervened and put the matter to rest following an apology from Solanki, a formal complaint was lodged against Solanki and 20 of his supporters two days later by executive engineer Ashok Kumar Singh. Following Solanki’s arrest, his supporters came out on the streets to protest against it.

Clash with Police Over Tinted Car Windows

In May 2012, Solanki and his supporters allegedly clashed with the traffic police after they objected to his tinted car windows. He was stopped by police in Faridabad while he was on his way to Delhi from Kanpur. Solanki tried to persuade the police to let him go by telling them that he was an MLA, but they insisted on removing the black film from the car windows as tinted windows were illegal. Thereafter, Solanki and his supporters allegedly engaged in a brawl and beat up the police following which Solanki had to pay Rs 2,000 as a fine. The incident left UP CM Akhilesh Yadav embarrassed as he had promised to end the crime and hooliganism following apprehensions that the Samajwadi Party’s return to power would add to “goondaism” in the state.

Tricolour Cake Cutting Case

In 2011, the additional chief metropolitan magistrate issued bailable warrants against Solanki and PWD minister Shivpal Singh Yadav for cutting a cake bearing the colours of the Indian national flag. The cake was cut by the Samajwadi party leaders during the birthday bash of SP leader Harmohan Singh on 18 October 2010. SP leaders Harmohan Singh Yadav, Sachin Tangdi, Jitendra Bahadur Singh, Shiv Pal Singh, and Irfan Solanki, were booked under Section 2 of the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act-1971 in a case registered with the Gwaltoli police.

Doctors Row In UP

On 28 February 2014, Solanki was allegedly attacked by junior doctors of the Ganesh Shankar Vidhyarthi Memorial Medical College in Swaroop Nagar, Kanpur. Apparently, a junior doctor’s vehicle was hit from behind by another vehicle driven by an elderly man named Qadir Ali near the Swaroop Nagar petrol pump. Consequently, the junior doctor and his friends started roughing up the elderly man. Solanki, who intervened to defend the elderly man, was manhandled by the junior doctors, who also damaged his vehicle and assaulted his driver and gunner. Irked over the incident, MLA’s supporters went on a rampage. More than a hundred Samajwadi Party musclemen or goondas instigated violence by entering the medical college hostel and started beating up students and professors. Solanki’s supporters took to the streets to raise anti-police slogans. They also pelted stones at passing vehicles and damaged scores of parked vehicles. Agitated local shopkeepers downed their shutters. As tension spread, a heavy police force, comprising PAQC and RAQF, was rushed to the spot to take control of the situation. The incident resulted in several cops, journalists, and civilians being severely injured. A large team of policemen led by SSP Yashashvi Yadav entered the campus of G.S.V.M. Medical College without seeking the permission of principal Dr Navneet Kumar and manhandled him by holding him by the collar. In the aftermath of the incident, thousands of doctors at hospitals across Uttar Pradesh went on strike, describing Samajwadi Party’s rule as the “goonda raj,” and they demanded Solanki’s arrest. Doctors allege that several doctors in UP were mercilessly beaten and dragged by policemen following the G.S.V.M. Medical College incident. Health services in all of Uttar Pradesh were severely affected and several dozen patients died during the strike. Following a six-day strike by the doctors in UP, Solanki was booked on charges of attempt to murder, rioting and voluntarily causing hurt. The FIR against Solanki was filed at Swarup Nagar Police Station on the complaint of Himanshu Kumar Singh, a medical student who was injured during the clash on February 28. Then, Solanki held a press conference where he produced the Qadir Ali and claimed that he merely stepped in to save him., The doctors withdrew their strike following various legal developments and assurances from politicians like Mulayam Singh Yadav. The protests led the Uttar Pradesh government to transfer SSP Yashaswi Yadav from Kanpur to DGP’s office in Lucknow.

Jajmau Arson Case

On 7 November 2022, Irfan Solanki, his brother Rizwan Solanki, Shaukat Ali, Mohd Sharif, and Israel Atawala were booked for allegedly setting Nazir Fatima’s hut on fire on 3 November 2022 with the intention to grab her plot located in the posh Defence Colony area in Kanpur. On the day her house was burnt, Fatima and her family were away attending a marriage ceremony. The land of the complainant was located next to Rizwan Solanki’s residence and was valued at around Rs 2 crore. Solanki and his brother were booked under IPC sections 436 (mischief by fire or explosive substance with intent to destroy house, etc) and 506 (criminal intimidation). Thereafter, the duo was on the run to evade the arrest. While Solanki was absconding, he was accused of boarding a flight on a forged Aadhaar card, compromising airport security. After evading arrest for over three weeks in the case Solanki and his brother surrendered before the police in December 2022. The duo were later produced before the MP/MLA court which remanded them in 14-day judicial custody following which they were sent to Kanpur jail. Later, in the same month, he was shifted to the Maharajganj district jail in Uttar Pradesh. In March 2023, The MP/MLA sessions court framed charges against Irfan Solanki, his brother Rizwan Solanki, Shaukat Ali, Mohd Sharif, and Israel Atawala for allegedly setting Nazir Fatima’s hut on fire on 7 November 2022 with an intention to grab her plot. On December 2 after surrendering at the camp office of the Kanpur commissioner of police in connection with an arson case. Gangster Act was invoked against Solanki and his brother.

Issued Letter To Six Bangladesh Migrants to Authorise Them as Indian Nationals

On 10 December 2022, he was also accused of giving a certificate to six Bangladeshi citizens proclaiming them as Indian citizens. The police had raided a house in Kanpur’s Aryanagar area and caught Bangladesh national Rizwan Mohammad (53) staying illegally with his family, including his wife Hina Khalid (45), daughter Rukhsar Rizwan (21), the couple’s two minor sons aged 17 and 15 and Rizwan’s father-in-law Khalid Majid (79). A letter purportedly signed by MLA Irfan Solanki in which he said that Rizwan and his family were Indian nationals was recovered from the house along with other documents like passports besides cash and jewellery. Three Aadhaar cards prepared with fake documents were also seized from them.

Facts/Trivia

• In April 2023, Irfan Solanki’s wife, Naseem wrote a letter to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath requesting him to shift her husband from Maharajganj Jail to Kanpur Jail on the humanitarian ground in the upcoming Ramzan month. Apparently, Naseem was in a panic after mafia-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother were shot dead in Prayagraj. In her letter, she stated that Irfan had been shifted to Maharajganj Jail due to some kind of conspiracy in order to torture him physically and mentally. Naseem said,
  

  The treatment of Irfan is worse than animals in Maharajganj jail. Neither the family members nor their advocate Gaurav Dixit are allowed to meet him. Irfan’s health is very bad. His weight has reduced. He has stones in both his kidneys”

• While Solanki was lodged in Maharajganj jail in 2023, the police confiscated properties that he had allegedly amassed through illegal means. The police seized property worth Rs 30 crore of his aide Shaukat Pahalwan and land worth Rs 5 crore belonging to Solanki.
