Prraneeth Vuppala was born on Tuesday, 2 Jan 2007 (age 16 years; as of 2023) in Telangana, India. His zodiac sign is Capricorn. He belongs to Alagadapa village in the Nalgonda district of Telangana. When he was a child, his parents used to take him to play tennis, swimming, and other sports, and from there he started to play chess and developed an interest in it. Later, his parents taught him some basic rules of chess and then he joined a chess club for practising. He also took coaching from Ramaraju, the owner of Ramaraju Academy of Chess Education, for about seven years. He also works and trains with Victor Mikhalevski, an Israeli chess grandmaster. He went to David Memorial High School in Tarnaka, Hyderabad. Later, he began to study at Vishwa Chaitanya Junior College, Hyderabad, Telangana.

Chess

In 2017, Prraneeth Vuppala won in Hyderabad District Under-11. In the same year, he took part in Telangana State Under-11. He participated in the 4th IIFL Wealth Mumbai Op 2018. In 2018, he participated in many chess competitions including Capablanca Men IM, Narcis 7 GM, FSIM in Budapest, 3rd IIFL Wealth Mumbai Open, and 11th Triandria Open. In 2019, he participated in Netanya Open, 37th Balaton GM, and Bavarian Championship. In 2021, he took part in Vezerkepzo GM and multiple matches of Titled Tuesday Blitz. In March 2023, he participated in MPL National Teams Chess Championship held in Jammu, India.

 

In 2023, he defeated GM Hans Niemann of the United States in the penultimate round of the Baku Open tournament and became the grandmaster after achieving 2,500 FIDE rating points.

  • Prraneeth Vuppala is the 6th grandmaster from Telangana.
  • On 15 May 2023, after Prraneeth Vuppala became India’s 82nd grandmaster, the Chief Minister of Telangana, K. Chandrashekar Rao invited Prraneeth and his parents to the Secretariat to congratulate them. The Chief Minister also gave him a reward of Rs. 2.5 crores to support him financially and undergo advanced training in chess.
  • In an interview, he talked about how he felt after becoming the 82nd grandmaster of India and what are his future goals. He said,

    I am happy and I will keep working hard. My next target is to reach 2,600 rating points. I didn’t set any deadline but want to achieve it as soon as possible. My goal is to achieve 2,800 rating points and become the World Champion. But as of now, my focus is on my next tournament. I am going to participate in the Asian Continental tournament in Kazakhstan starting next month.”

  • Reportedly, he practices chess eight to ten hours daily to win the World Chess Championship.
