Salman Fayyaz Ghani is a Pakistani three-star general who served as the Lahore Corps Commander from 2022 to 2023. He hit the headlines in May 2023 after a mob stormed his official residence in Lahore following which he was removed from his post as Corps Commander.

Salman Fayyaz Ghani was born in Pakistan. After completing his formal education, Salman applied for a commission into the Pakistan Army as an officer and joined the 79th Long Course of the Pakistan Military Academy (PMA) in Abbottabad, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, where he underwent military training for two years.

Career

Salman Fayyaz Ghani was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the 10th Battalion of the Frontier Force Regiment (FFR) after completing his training module at the PMA. As he climbed up the ranks, Ghani assumed numerous posts including Company Commander, Commanding Officer (CO), and Brigade Commander. As a brigadier, he served as commandant of the Quetta-based School of Infantry and Tactics. In February 2017, Salman Ghani was promoted to the rank of major general following which he was posted as General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 23rd Infantry Division in Jhelum district, Punjab Province, Pakistan.

In November 2020, Ghani was promoted to the rank of lieutenant general. Later, he was posted to the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi as Inspector General (IG) (Arms). In October 2022, he was appointed as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the IV Corps, also known as the Lahore Corps.

On 9 May 2023, during the political protests in Pakistan in support of Imran Khan, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, a mob entered his residence known as the Corps Commander House, formerly known as Jinnah House, and vandalised it. According to sources, Ghani had received orders from General Asim Munir, the Chief of the Pakistan Army, to open fire on the protestors if they tried to enter the Lahore cantonment; however, Ghani refused to fire upon the unarmed civilians. A video was uploaded on social media in which Ghani was seen trying to calm the protestors down while they were storming his house.

Ghani was removed from the post of Corps Commander on 12 May 2023 and was replaced by Lieutenant General Fayyaz Hussain Shah. Sources claim that Ghani was removed from his post as a punishment for disobeying direct orders from General Asim Munir. After his removal, he was posted to the General Headquarters (GHQ), Rawalpindi, as Inspector General (IG) (Arms).
