Remya Nambeesan was born on Wednesday, 1 January 1986 while some sources claim that she was born on Monday, 24 March 1986 (age 37 years; as of 2023) in Chottanikkara, Cochin, Kerala. She attended the Mahatma Gandhi Public School, Ambadimala in Chottanikkara. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Communicative English from St. Teresa’s College, Ernakulam. She is trained in both Carnatic music and classical dance.

Parents & Siblings

Remya’s father, Subrahmaniam Unni, used to act in theatres and was part of groups such as Jubilee and Harishree. while her mother, Jayasree, is a homemaker. She also has a brother, Rahul, who has worked as the music director in Malayalam films like Philips and the Monkey Pen. He has also worked as a playback singer in the film Thattathin Marayathu.

Television

Before she started her acting career in the film industry, Remya was a host of a song-on-demand music show called ‘Hello, Good Evening’ on the Malayalam channel Kairali TV.

She has also been a judge on popular shows like Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Seniors – 3 on Zee Tamil, Super Star Junior on Sun TV, Top Singer on Flowers TV, Super 4 Season 2 on Mazhavil Manorama, D 3 Dance and D 4 Dance on Mazhavil Manorama, and Dancing Stars Season 1 on Asianet TV.

Film

Remya first appeared as a child artist in the drama film Sayahnam in 2000, directed by R. Sarath. The film gained critical acclaim.

After that, she played minor supporting roles in films like Sathyan Anthikad’s satire film Narendran Makan Jayakanthan Vaka (2001), the art film Sthithi (2002), under R. Sarath’s direction again, and Gramophone (2003) and Perumazhakkalam (2004), both directed by Kamal. She worked with Sarath again, for the third time, for the short film Bhoomikkoru Charamageetham (2006), which was based on a poem by O. N. V. Kurup. Her first leading role was in the 2006 film Aanachandam, in which she portrayed the role of a bold dance teacher.

In 2008, she did her first non-Malayalam project, titled Andamaina Manasulo in Telugu, which was followed by her first Tamil film, titled Raman Thediya Seethai.

Remya gained critical acclaim for her roles in Traffic (2011) and Chaappa Kurishu (2011). She also made cameo appearances in Bachelor Party (2012) and Ivan Megharoopan (2012). She also acted in Saji Surendran’s comedy films Husbands in Goa (2012) and Oru Yathrayil (2013). Remya also worked in the web series titled Dayaa (2023) on Disney+Hotstar.

Music

She has sung many devotional songs and recorded tracks for devotional albums like Chottanikarai Bhagavathi. She has also contributed her singing talent to a few Malayalam films and has sung the song Ivan Megharoopan, from the Malayalam biopic on P. Kunhiraman Nair, which was composed by Sharreth.

Facts/Trivia

• Remya started acting in the films when she was studying in 9th standard.

• In an interview, Remya spoke about her serious relationship. She mentioned that once she became famous in the industry, a gap occurred between the couple. The person, who was not from the industry could not adjust to the busy life of the actress. Remya said that they decided to mutually end their relationship and to continue as friends.

• In an interview, Remya mentioned that she got her first opportunity to act in the film through her dance teacher.

• Since Remya was a child, she wanted to be a biology teacher and to pursue this dream, she selected Science as her subject for her high school studies.

• Remya enjoys cooking and experimenting with different food combinations in her leisure time.

• During an interview, Remya shared a story from her early days in the film industry when she accidentally upset and angered actor Mammootty. After her song “Ande Londe” in the film Ivan Megharoopan, directed by P. Balachandran, became a hit, she received a call while driving. Thinking it was a prank call, Remya hung up rudely. Later, she realized it was actually Mammootty calling to congratulate her. She met him later and apologized for her behaviour, and they resolved any misunderstandings.

• In 2017, Remya was summoned to Aluva Police Club to record her statement in the investigation against actor Dileep and others in connection with an alleged kidnapping and sexual assault of a woman actor who was close friends with Remya and on her way to Remya’s residence in Kochi.

• Remya is also a member of the Women in Cinema Collective, which was formed after an incident of attack against a popular female actor.
