He studied up to class 11 at Hungama Vijayaba Central College, Hungama. He developed an interest in cricket while he was studying in school. In an interview, while talking about it, Dilshan said,

My first encounter with cricket was when I saw a set of seniors playing cricket in the school grounds. Our school organized a big match about 4 or 5 years ago and it’s after watching that game that I wanted to play cricket.”

Soon, he joined his school’s cricket team. However, his school participated in only junior-level tournaments as cricket was an unaffordable luxury for the school kids. His school neither had a first-XI team nor it could afford a two-day cricket game. In an interview, while talking about it, Dilshan said,

Even to travel for matches, the kids had to pool in money. We didn’t get new balls for practices, we used the used match-balls. The entire school had about 3 pairs of pads and 3 or 4 bats, that’s what everyone used.”

Dilshan captained his school cricket team at the Under-15 level and later stopped playing for his school. He then started playing softball cricket and soon, caught the attention of the mainstream softball cricket teams in his area with his pace bowling. Meanwhile, he also played cricket for the district team. He attended various coaching camps organised by Mr Karunaratne which later helped him secure a place in the provincial team.
