Surinder Singh is an Indian Kabaddi player who has played for Himachal Pradesh in various national tournaments and U Mumba and Telugu Titans in the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL).

Surinder Singh (also spelt as Surender Singh) aka Surinder Singh Dehal was born on Thursday, 23 July 1998 (age 25 years; as of 2023) in Dehlan, Una, Himachal Pradesh, India. His zodiac sign is Leo. He started playing Kabaddi under his coach Sushil while playing in school and later enrolled at the SAI (Sports Authority of India) hostel in Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh where he trained for two years. He studied till 12th standard at Government Senior Secondary School Dehlan.

Due to some issues in his family, he returned back to his village where he kept on playing Kabaddi in the local tournaments. He later pursued a Bachelor of Physical Education and Sports degree at Lovely Professional University (LPU), Phagwara, Punjab. He later became a professional Kabaddi player.

Surinder Singh has played in many local and state-level tournaments for different teams such as Narwal Academy and Una in the Himachal Pradesh Kabaddi Championship 2022.

Junior

He was a member of the junior team of Himachal Pradesh which played in the 42nd Junior National Kabaddi Championship held at Ujjain, MP from 3 to 7 January 2016 and the 43rd Junior National Kabaddi Championship held at Baroda, Gujarat from 21 to 25 December 2016.

Leagues

Pro Kabaddi League (PKL)

Surinder Singh took part in the Future Kabaddi Heroes initiative in 2017  and later in the New Young Players (NYP) initiative, the programs of Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) for identifying youth talent; he was persuaded by his coach Jaipal to give trials in these initiatives. He was acquired by U Mumba from these initiatives for Rs 6 lakhs for PKL season 5 in 2017 and later retained for seasons 6 (2018) and 7 (2019) for Rs 6.60 lakhs and Rs 37.50 lakhs respectively.

Telugu Titans acquired him for Rs 55 lakhs for PKL season 8 (2021-22).

He returned to U Mumba in PKL season 9 for Rs 35.50 lakhs and became their captain. He was retained by U Mumba as a skipper in season 10 in 2023-24.

Star Kabaddi League

Surinder Singh played for Punjab Kings in seasons 1, 2, and 3 of the Star Kabaddi League since 2021.

Jersey Number

He wears jersey number 5 for U Mumba in PKL matches.

Facts/Trivia

• His playing position is right-cover, and he plays as a defender. He also plays as a raider in local tournaments.

• Surinder talked about his childhood in an interview and said that he was bullied by his schoolmates as they thought he was slow. They often made fun of him and sometimes threw him in the mud when it rained. He would wash his clothes in a nearby gurudwara and attend school in a wet uniform. He once saw two of his seniors being felicitated by the school management as they got selected in the military. This incident inspired Surinder to do something big in his life. He filled a sack with sand and started practising with them until he was included in the local teams.

• His signature move is the quick dash. He said in an interview that his skills improved drastically after playing alongside Fazel Atrachali and Anup Kumar.

• In an interview, he revealed that he was once playing in Mumbai when he read a comment on one of his social media posts which made him very angry. He sent his location to the person who commented and asked him to say such things to his face instead of comments. His management team later got to know about it and explained to him that he should not take bad comments seriously.

• He often works out in the gym to maintain his fitness.
