In May 2013, G. Sampath Kumar was investigating fake passport cases when he was posted as the Superintendent of Police, Q Branch CID (Internal Security). He found out about alleged spot-fixing being done in the Indian Premier League (IPL) by a network of bookies. G. Sampath Kumar alleged that several businessmen and players were involved in fixing and betting which included Kitty aka Utham Jain, Hotelier Vikram Agarwal, owner of Hotel Raddison Blu, his wife Vandana Agarwal, Gurunath Meiyappan and his wife Rupa, M S Dhoni, and Suresh Raina. It was later alleged that G. Sampath Kumar took a bribe of around Rs 60 lakhs from a financier named Mahendra Singh Ranka, and Kumar was suspended from the service in 2014.
He also alleged that the former Indian World Cup-winning captain M S Dhoni was involved in spot-fixing and also held several other positions that conflicted with his position as the Indian captain.
