Career

He served as a judge at Lahore High Court and held roles as the acting attorney general for Pakistan, as well as additional attorney general for Pakistan, CWA, and Kuwait. In 2017, he became the Special Prosecutor General (PG) for the bureau. His appointment involved representing the bureau in crucial cases, including the Hudaibya Paper Mills reference case. In November 2023, he became the chief election commissioner for the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). The statement from the Inter-Provincial Liaison Ministry mentioned that he would hold this position for three months, managing the planning of the upcoming PCB elections. His duties encompassed overseeing elections for the Regions and the PCB chairman. In the statement, he said,

Shah Khawar Board of Governors will hold elections on completion. The deadline for the election of the chairman is February 4, 2024.”

On 24 January 2024, he was named the interim chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board. In an interview, he said,

I would like to thank the Patron of the PCB, Mr Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar, for reposing trust in me. My primary responsibility will be to hold the election of Chairman PCB in a free and transparent manner at the earliest.”

Following his appointment as the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board, Khawar said in a statement,

My primary responsibility will be to hold the election in a free and transparent manner.”

Facts/Trivia

  • He is the fifth individual to lead the PCB. Before him, the board’s affairs were overseen by Ramiz Raja, Najam Sethi, Ahmed Shehzad Farooq Rana, and Zaka Ashraf.
  • After he was elected as the interim chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board, the Ministry additionally informed that Mohsin Naqvi, the temporary Chief Minister of Punjab, was selected by the Prime Minister to replace Zaka Ashraf on the Board of Governors and Interim Managing Committee of the PCB. The two notifications were issued after Zaka Ashraf stepped down as the Chairman of the Interim Management Committee. The government formed this committee in July to oversee board affairs, and its term is scheduled to conclude on 5 February 2024. As per Article 7 (2) of the PCB Constitution, the Election Commissioner is authorized to exercise the powers of the PCB Chairman.
