Shrestha Thakur is an Indian Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in Uttar Pradesh. She is a 2012-batch IPS officer, who is known for intelligence in solving crimes. In 2024, she became a victim of marital fraud when she was deceived into marrying a man who pretended to be an IRS officer. As a result, she was cheated out of lakhs of rupees.

Career
According to Shrestha, she experienced molestation twice by miscreants while studying in Kanpur; however, the police did not take adequate action in response. This led to a significant turning point in her life, sparking a desire to become a police officer. She pursued this aspiration and in 2012, she achieved her goal by qualifying for the Provincial Police Service (PPS) and becoming a police officer. Shrestha Thakur gives credit to her brothers for helping her to prepare for a difficult exam like PPS.
Transferred for taking action against the BJP leaders in Uttar Pradesh
She gained media attention in June 2017 when, as the Circle Officer (CO) of Syana in Bulandshahr district of Uttar Pradesh, she confronted local BJP leaders for flouting traffic regulations. She made headlines when she arrested 5 BJP leaders for obstructing a government servant from performing their duty. A video of her reprimanding the BJP leaders for supposedly violating traffic rules and seeking leniency went viral, earning her widespread acclaim for upholding her duty. During the confrontation, she demanded that the BJP leaders get a written declaration from Yogi Adityanath, the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, alleging that the police had no authority to inspect vehicles. She also accused the BJP leaders of promoting ‘Goondaraj’ and tarnishing the party’s reputation. In July 2017, she was transferred to Behraich district in Uttar Pradesh. She shared a message regarding her transfer to Behraich on her Facebook account, which read,
Got transfer to Bahraich, it’s Nepal border, don’t worry my friends I am happy…. I accept it as a reward for my good work…. u all are invited to Bahraich(sic). Jahan bhi jayega roshni lutayega, kisi charagh ka apna makan nahi hota (A lamp does not have a house. It spreads light wherever it goes).”

Filed Complaint Against Ex-husband
In 2024, she lodged a complaint in Ghaziabad, alleging that her ex-husband had deceived her by pretending to be an IRS officer and swindling lakhs of rupees from many people. She said that her ex-husband, Rohit Raj Singh, not only deceived her by marrying her under false claims but also defrauded people by falsely representing her as a police officer and collecting money from them. He allegedly transferred Rs 15 lakh, intended for purchasing a plot in Lucknow, to his account using fake signatures. Thakur revealed that she married him in 2018 through a matrimonial site. In an interview, while talking about her ex-husband’s fraud, she revealed,
Rohit Raj Singh had described himself as a 2008 batch IRS officer, Deputy Commissioner and posted in Ranchi…Despite knowing the truth, the applicant did not spoil the marital relationship and fulfilled all the financial demands of Rohit and his family and in 2018 took a loan against my own salary and transferred the money to Rohit’s father’s account. Even after supporting Rohit completely, there was no change in his behaviour and he continued to collect huge amounts of money from many people by misleading and cheating them using my police post and name. After talking to Rohit and his family on this issue, Rohit and his family started harassing me. I was beaten up by Rohit Raj Singh and my child was threatened with death.”
She alleged that Rohit, along with his father and brother, falsely transferred Rs 15 lakh to their account by forging signatures and misusing ATM cards. She mentioned that this money was saved for purchasing a plot in Lucknow. In an interview, she alleged that even after divorcing Rohit, he misused her name for cheating people. She said,
Fed up with all these things, I got divorced from Rohit Raj Singh three years ago. But to misuse my name, after Ranchi and Bihar, he had made his new base in Kaushambi in Ghaziabad. He started cheating people and told all my staff that he was posted as Commissioner of Income Tax, Delhi. He also got married again two years ago. He has created a fake Facebook ID by misusing the photo of my small child.”
The Ghaziabad police arrested Rohit Singh on 9 February 2024.
