During his career, he led three zones of LIC, the Southern Zone, North Central Zone, and Northern Zone, located in Chennai, Kanpur, and Delhi respectively. He was also the senior divisional manager for the Ahmedabad and Ernakulum divisions. He then became executive director, where he was head of the Personnel Department. Under this role, he managed the Pension and Group Insurance division as well. He is credited with introducing many employee-friendly initiatives. He then became the zonal manager (in charge) of the North Zone. On 14 March 2019, he took charge as the Chairman of LIC, India for a term of five years.
He completed his term which was extended from July 2021 to March 2022. He received a second extension from April 2022 to March 2023. The reasoning given for the extension was so that he could complete the mega LIC initial public offering (IPO). Although there were rumours that the Narendra Modi government was going to extend his term by another six months, his term ended in March 2023 and Siddhartha Mohanty took over as Chairman.
