Patricia Routledge is an American actress known for her work in theatre, television, and film. She made her professional stage debut in 1952 at the Liverpool Playhouse. She was nominated for the BAFTA TV Award for Best Light Entertainment Performance in 1992 and 1993. In 1966, she made her Broadway debut in How’s the World Treating You. Her film appearances include To Sir, with Love (1967) and Don’t Raise the Bridge, Lower the River (1968).
In 1988, she won the Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical for Candide. Routledge gained prominence on television in the 1980s for her work in monologues written by Alan Bennett and Victoria Wood.

Patricia Routledge has never married and has no children. She has stated that she has chosen to focus on her career and that she does not have the time or energy to dedicate to a serious relationship or having a family.
In an interview, she said: “I didn’t make a decision not to be married and not to be a mother. Life just turned out like that because my involvement in acting was so total”.
Routledge mentioned in the same interview that she had been involved in two affairs: one with a married man when she was in her late 20s, and one with a playwright directing a play she was in some years later.

Patricia Routledge Career
In 1993, Patricia Routledge was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire. She received an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters from Lancaster University, in 2008. She received an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters from the University of Chester at Chester Cathedral, in 2019.
Since 2000, she has lived in Chichester. She helped raise £10,000 towards the restoration of the cathedral roof, in 2020. In March 2023, she was a close friend of the first female Speaker of the House of Commons, Betty Boothroyd, and sang at her funeral.
Routledge has had a long career in theatre and has been a long-standing member of the Royal Shakespeare Company. In 1966, she made her Broadway debut in Roger Milner’s comedy How’s the World Treating You?. She played Ruth in the Joseph Papp production of The Pirates of Penzance, in 1980. In 1988, she won a Laurence Olivier Award. She played Queen Mary in Royce Ryton’s play Crown Matrimonial, in 2008. She has toured with a show entitled Facing The Music, since 2009.
