Girish Chandra Murmu is an IAS officer. He was appointed as the first Lieutenant Governor of Jammu & Kashmir on 31 October 2019. Mr. Murmu resigned as L-G exactly one year after it was created.

GC Murmu was born on Saturday, 21 November 1959 (age 63 years; as of 2022) in Sundergarh, Odisha. His zodiac sign is Scorpio. He pursued a Master of Arts at the Utkal University in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. He then went to the United Kingdom to pursue an MBA from the University of Birmingham.

Career
Murmu is a 1985 batch IAS officer from the Gujarat Cadre and has served on many key positions in the Gujarat Government. He has been the Commissioner of Mines and Minerals, Managing Director of the Gujarat Maritime Board, Joint Secretary of Law and Order in Gujarat, Managing Director of the Gujarat Industrial Investment Corporation (GIIC), and the Principal Secretary of Narendra Modi when he was the Chief Minister of Gujarat.
Murmu is a trusted aide of Narendra Modi. He has advised Modi in many legal matters during his tenure as the Gujarat CM. In 2014, when Modi was elected as the Prime Minister of India, he appointed Murmu as the Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Finance. On 1 March 2019, Murmu was appointed as the Expenditure Secretary of India. In May 2019, he was involved in Nirmala Sitharaman‘s team, which handled the 2019 Union Budget.
On 25 October 2019, he was nominated by the President of India to be the first Lieutenant Governor of the newly formed Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir. On 31 October 2019, Murmu was sworn-in as the first Lieutenant Governor of J&K. He was sworn-in on the same day as the first Governor of Ladakh, RK Mathur.
On 5 August 2020, he resigned as the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu & Kashmir, and he was succeeded by the former Minister of State for Communications and Minister of State for Railways, Manoj Sinha. On 6 August 2020, Mr. Murmu was appointed as Comptroller and Auditor General of India (C&AG); he succeeded Rajiv Mehrishi as C&AG.
