Facts/Trivia
- In an interview with The New York Times, Narang told, her paternal grandfather had served in the Indian army. She further said that military duty was in her blood, and she had always aspired to become military personnel.
- While she was in high school, she visited the Pearl Harbor National Memorial in Hawaii along with her parents, where, for the first time, she learned about the tragic event of Pearl Harbour bombings. This trip boosted her inspiration to serve in the United States Army, subsequently, the same day she mailed her application for the entrance at the United States Military Academy (also known as West Point).
- Anmol Narang will be doing efforts to represent her faith and Sikh identity in the US Army. This will also inspire Americans to learn more about Sikhism, the 5th extensively practised religion in the world. After her induction into the US Army, she said
It’s an incredible feeling. It’s a humbling experience, I have never worked harder for anything in my life. Being a Sikh woman is a very important part of my identity and if my experience can play a small role in being an inspiration for others, regardless of the career field, that will be wonderful.”
- Although many other Sikhs have graduated from the US Military Academy at West point, 23 years old Anmol is the first observant Sikh woman to achieve this feat. This means that she is the first Sikh who will be allowed to follow practices of Sikh religion while serving in the army, including the practice of growing Kesh (hair) naturally without cutting it. Since the news of Narang becoming the first Sikh observant went out, many prominent persons congratulated her including Captain Amrinder Singh (the Chief Minister of Punjab, India).
I congratulate 23 year-old Anmol Narang who on Saturday became the first observant Sikh to graduate from the US Military Academy at West Point. Anmol, the entire Punjab is proud of you. God bless!https://t.co/fZvuo5TNCY
