Khaled Hosseini an Afghan-American novelist and physician. He worked as a doctor in California after graduating from college, a predicament he compared to “an arranged marriage.” Hosseini has published three novels, most notably his 2003 debut The Kite Runner, all of which are at least partially set in Afghanistan and feature an Afghan as the protagonist. Following The Kite Runner ‘s success, he retired from medicine for full-time writing.

Furthermore, all three of his novels were bestsellers: The Kite Runner (2003) was on the New York Times Best Seller list for 101 weeks, four of them at number one. A Thousand Splendid Suns (2007) served 103 weeks as a Times Best Seller, 15 at number one. And the Mountains Echoed (2013) debuted close to the top of the Times list and remained on it until January 2014 for 33 weeks.

In 2003, Hosseini published his first book, The Kite Runner, a young boy ‘s tale, Amir, in 2003, struggling to establish a closer relationship with his father and coping with memories of a haunting childhood event. The novel is set in Afghanistan, from the fall of the monarchy to the collapse of the Taliban regime, and in the San Francisco Bay Area, in Fremont, California in particular.

According to Nielsen BookScan, the book was the number one bestseller in the United States for 2005. The Kite Runner was also created by the author as an audiobook read. The Kite Runner was adapted in a film of the same name which was released in December 2007. Hosseini made a cameo appearance as a bystander at the end of the movie when Amir purchases a kite that he later flies with Sohrab.

The second novel by Hosseini, A Thousand Splendid Stars, was published in 2007 and is also set in Afghanistan. The story deals with much of the same issues as the first Hosseini but takes a more feminine perspective. It follows the story of two women, Mariam and Laila, who become entwined in their lives. The story is set during the tumultuous 30-year transition from Soviet occupation to Taliban control and post-Taliban rebuilding of Afghanistan.

The novel was discharged by Riverhead Books on May 22, 2007, at the same time as the Simon & Schuster audiobook. Movie rights have been acquired by producer Scott Rudin and Columbia Pictures.

Hosseini’s third novel And the Mountains Echoed was released on May 21, 2013. Before its release, Hosseini said:

Hosseini back in 1984 graduated from Independence High School in San Jose and enrolled at Santa Clara University, where he received a Bachelor of Biology degree in 1988. Hosseini entered the School of Medicine at the University of California San Diego the next year, where he received his M.D. In 1993.

In 1997 he completed his internal medicine residency at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. Additionally, Hosseini had been practicing medicine for more than ten years, up to a year and a half after The Kite Runner was published.

Hosseini was born in Kabul, Afghanistan, the eldest of five children. His father, Nasser, worked as a diplomat for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kabul while his mother worked as a Persian language teacher at girls high school; both originate from Herat. Furthermore, Hosseini spent eight years of his childhood in Kabul’s middle-class neighborhood Wazir Akbar Khan. He doesn’t remember his sister, Raya, who was always discriminated against for being a woman.

In 1970, Hosseini and his family moved to Iran where his father worked for the Tehran-based Afghan embassy. Hosseini ‘s family returned to Kabul in 1973, and in July of the same year, Hosseini ‘s youngest brother was born. His father obtained a job in Paris, France, in 1976 when Hosseini was 11 years old and moved the family there.

Hosseini is married to Roya Hosseini. The couple has two children, Haris and Farah. Haris, a competitive speaker, finaled in Original Oratory twice at the national level, finishing third at the 2018 NSDA National Championship, first at the 2019 NSDA National Championship, and is now attending Columbia University in New York.

Currently, Hosseini lives in Northern California with his family. He is fluent in English as well as his native Dari-Persian and Pashto.
