Maponyane joined Chiefs when he was 19 and started by earning R600 a month. He scored on debut on 12 April 1981 against Leceister City in Eldorardo. He is the only player to win Footballer of the Year three times, he won the award in 1984 and 1987 with the Chiefs. Maponyane captained the club from 1985 to 1988.
He is Kaizer Chief’s all-time top goalscorer with 85 goals. Maponyane had a seven-month spell with Vitoria Setubal. His teammates couldn’t speak English but only his coach Stuart Baxter could. When the season ended and everyone was leaving, he left for South Africa and never came back. Also, he went on a three-month trial to Grasshopper Zurich with Fani Madida during his spell. Maponyane left Chiefs for Dynamos in the year 1991.
In the year 1993, he joined Orlando Pirates from which he won the year 1994 league title and African Champions League in the year 1995. Also had a full-time job at Premier Milling. He began working for Adidas in the year 1984 and later had sponsorship deals and endorsements with them.

Marks Maponyane Wife
Marks was previously married to Sylvia. The duo got married in 1985 and lived in the classy Marks Maponyane house in Midstream Estate, which is to the East of Johannesburg. The couple has two kids known as Katlego and Masego.
Marks and Sylvia later divorced, with the Maponyane wife accusing him of violence among other charges. In August 2017, Marks was found guilty of assault, and he was fined R3000 or six months imprisonment.
