Jonathan Elias Career
Elias oversees the 7Salutes beat, where he is always on the lookout for tales about our men and women in uniform who are serving or have served. Elias comes to ABC7/WJLA-TV from Boston’s WBZ, where he worked as a principal anchor and lead reporter. He was the only reporter on the finish line on the day of the Boston Marathon explosions.
His reporting garnered him three of the industry’s greatest journalism honors: a DuPont, a Peabody, and a National Emmy Award. Elias won Emmy Awards for being the greatest anchor, writer, and general assignment reporter for four years in a row while in Boston. For the Bruins, Red Sox, Celtics, and Patriots, he covered blizzards, hurricanes, and parades.
Elias was the lead anchor at KNXV in Phoenix before coming to Boston. He covered major stories across the country, including Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Rita, and the sniper case in Washington, D.C. He won a national Peabody Award for his investigative work, which revealed a major breach in the T.S.A. screening procedure. Elias also founded the Welcome Home Project, a nonprofit organization dedicated to honoring and thanking returning Purple Heart recipients.
Elias has worked as a reporter in Birmingham and Joplin, as well as a principal anchor at KCBS in Los Angeles and WCCO in Minneapolis. He has covered major events such as the Los Angeles riots, the Oklahoma City bombing, the TWA 800 tragedy, and the Oakland Hills fire.
