Subodh Kumar Jaiswal was born on Saturday, 22 September 1962 (age 58 years; as of 2020) in Sindri, Dhanbad in Jharkhand. His zodiac sign is Virgo. He did his schooling at CMRI branch of De Nobili, Digwadih, Dhanbad in 1978. He pursued his graduation in English at DAV College, Chandigarh, and later, he did an MBA at University Business School, Panjab University. While pursuing MBA, he appeared for the NDA exam thrice, but he could not clear the exam. He then attempted the UPSC exam and cleared it.

His father, Shiv Shankar Jaiswal, passed away in 2008, and he was contractor of the Food Corporation of India, a businessman, and philanthropist. Subodh’s mother’s name is Karuna Jaiswal. He has two brothers, Prince and Manoj Kumar Jaiswal (Executive Vice President at Murugappa Group). His grandfather, HN Chowdhary, was an Excise Inspector.

Career
After clearing the UPSC exam, he was appointed as the Additional Superintendent of Police in Amravati, Maharashtra, in 1986. He was appointed as the head of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the High Court in 2003 to investigate a multi-crore fake stamp paper scam conducted by Abdul Karim Telgi. The case was later handed over to the CBI. He was appointed as the head of the Anti-Terrorism squad to probe the Malegaon blast case in 2006.

He has also served in the Special Protection Group (SPG), Intelligence Bureau (IB), and the Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW). In 2018, he was appointed as the Police Commissioner of Mumbai, and in 2019, he served as Maharashtra’s Director General of Police (DGP). In May 2021, after a series of meetings between Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Chief Justice of India NV Ramana, and the opposition leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, he was appointed as the director of the Central Bureau of Investigation. Initially, three names were shortlisted for the position, which included Kumar Rajesh Chandra (1985-Bihar cadre IPS), VSK Kaumudi (1986-Andhra Pradesh cadre), and Subodh Kumar Jaiswal. On Subodh’s appointment, Secretary ACC Srinivas R Katikithala said,
The Appointments Committee of Cabinet has based on the panel recommended by the committee, approved the appointment of Subodh Kumar Jaiswal, IPS (MH: 1985) as Director, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for two years from the date of assumption of charge of the office or until further orders whichever is earlier.”

- His father started Rotary Club in Sindri for the welfare of people in 1992, and he was the head of the Sindri Rotary Club till 2008.
- While he was in school and college, he used to participate in various sports such as football, badminton, and volleyball.
- After being appointed as Maharashtra DGP in 2019, various disagreements had arisen between Uddhav Thackeray and Subodh. While addressing the media, Devendra Fadnavis, former chief minister of Maharashtra, said,
Mr Jaiswal is a competent officer. But he was frustrated with how the State government has been functioning over the last few months. He was never taken into confidence. This has happened for the first time in the State.”
