James Beard Family
Beard was born to Elizabeth and John Beard. His mother runs the Gladstone Hotel while his father worked at the city’s customs house. His family resides on the Pacific coast in Gearhart, Oregon, where Beard was exposed to Pacific Northwest cuisine.
James Beard Education
Beard joined Reed College in Portland, Oregon but was expelled for homosexuality back in 1922. He later earned his honorary degree in 1976 from the college. Back 1923, he joined a theatrical troupe and studied voice and theater abroad until 1927, when he returned to the United States.
