Wilton Gregory ( Wilton Daniel Gregory) is a prelate of the Catholic Church currently the Archbishop of Washington. As of 2005 to 2019, he served as the Archbishop of Atlanta, as from 1994 to 2004, the Bishop of Belleville, Illinois, and Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago as of 1983 to 1994. He as well served as the president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) from 2001 to 2004.

He got to be named Archbishop of Atlanta in 2004 in one of Pope John Paul II’s last episcopal appointments before Pope’s death. Pope Francis got him a cardinal at a consistory held in Rome on November 28, 2020 and became the first African-American cardinal.

Gregory joined St. Carthage Grammar School In 1958 and became a priest before he converted to Catholicism. He got baptized and earned his First Communion in 1959. He was then confirmed by Bishop Raymond P. Hillinger later that year hegraduated from St. Carthage in 1961.

He then joined Quigley Preparatory Seminary South and Niles College in Chicago and St. Mary of the Lake Seminary in Mundelein. He completed his doctorate in the liturgy (SLD) at the Pontifical Liturgical Institute at the Pontifical Atheneum of St. Anselm in Rome, after ordination.
