P Allen Smith Biography

Paul Allen Smith (P Allen Smith), an American author, television host, entrepreneur, and conservationist. He was born in Little Rock and raised in McMinnville, Tennessee.

P Allen Smith Education

Smith attended Hendrix College and received a Rotary International Scholarship to study garden design and history at the University of Manchester in England, where he also studied English gardens that had been visited by John Adams and Thomas Jefferson in the 18th century.

He uses his Arkansas home, Moss Mountain Farm, which The New York Times hails as a “stunning estate,” as an epicenter for promoting the local food movement, organic gardening and the preservation of heritage poultry breeds.

Smith created his farm to serve as a place of inspiration, education, and conservation and provides visitors from around the country locally sourced meals to introduce them to an expression of the regional cuisine.

Moss Mountain Farm is grounded in historical precedent, inspired by regional influences and guided by modern-day innovation—all of which are helping to write a new chapter in the evolution of the classic American farm and a celebration of the cuisine of the South.

In 2009, Smith founded the Heritage Poultry Conservancy, which is dedicated to the preservation and support of threatened breeds and strains of domestic poultry. In addition, he strives to educate future generations through his work with Kids Plant It Earth. The curriculum he developed for the program teaches students about being good stewards of the planet through gardening.

Smith studied garden history and design at the University of Manchester in England, is an honorary member of the Garden Club of America and recipient of their Medal of Honor, is a fellow of the Royal Horticultural Society and a former board member of the Royal Oak Society.

His work is featured in national publications, highlighted at key events and commemorated in bestselling titles including P. Allen Smith’s Garden Home and P. Allen Smith’s Seasonal Recipes from the Garden, which is a nod to his love for organic, regional cuisine. His media company, Hortus Ltd, produces three national, award-winning television shows: Garden Home (which has enjoyed 14 seasons on PBS), Garden to Table, also on Public Television, and Garden Style, now in its 17th season of syndication.

In the half-hour episodes of P. Allen Smith Garden Home, Smith empowers people to discover their own style and to create beautiful indoor and outdoor living spaces in their own homes. His mission is to connect with people, cultivate health and mindfulness, and ultimately inspire others to live a more natural life. He shares lifestyle trends and stories of people who are making a positive impact in their communities.

Smith has also appeared frequently on The Weather Channel, the CBS Early Show, the NBC “Today Show” and other national TV programs teaching viewers gardening and design techniques. He has also written several books on gardening and contributes pieces to numerous publications.

Smith’s design firm, P. Allen Smith & Associates, specializes in estate master planning, garden design, and installation, with projects at public institutions, private corporations, and family estates. He is a former Board Member of the Royal Oak Foundation (the American partner of England’s National Trust) and has contributed to preservation efforts at Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello and George Washington’s Mount Vernon among other historic properties.

Smith book, P. Allen Smith’s Seasonal Recipes from the Garden, was released in December 2010. P. Allen Smith’s Seasonal Recipes from the Garden features 120 recipes: 30 for each season. These are dishes that everyone loves to eat.

Taking delicious advantage of ingredients as accessible as bell peppers and carrots and as beloved as fresh peaches and tomatoes, the recipes are Allen’s favorites, most from his own kitchen and some adapted from family and friends. They are perfect for those who garden as well as anyone who simply enjoys fresh food. They include:

SPRING: Chilled Pea Soup with Bacon and Whipped Cream; Grilled Salmon Sandwich with Lemon-Dill Mayo; Salad of Asparagus, Edamame, Arugula, and Cheese; Radish Top Pasta; Speckled Strawberry Ice Cream

SUMMER: Savory Grit Cakes with Oven-Smoked Tomatoes; Zucchini and Lemon Salad; Aunt Martha’s Corn Pudding; Rosemary-Garlic Smoked Pork Tenderloin; Peach Moon Tart

FALL: Parmesan Pecan Crisps; Roasted Red Pepper Soup; Citrus-Glazed Turkey Breast; Goat Cheese and Leek Tart; Allen’s Favorite Sweet Potato Pie

WINTER: Cranberry Spice Cocktail; Slow-Cooker Lamb Stew; Savory Rosemary Butternut Squash; Tiny Orange Muffins; Old-Fashioned Blackberry Jam Cake

The recipes, many of which are Southern-inflected, include delightful personal stories, full of Allen’s much-loved wit and charm. All-American Blueberry Muffins evoke memories of him and his siblings roaming the woods searching for wild berries; Lady Peas with Red Tomato Relish reminds him of shelling peas with Ma Smith in his grandparents’ kitchen after supper; and Blue Cheese and Onion Cornbread conjures up the great sweet-versus-unsweet Southern cornbread debate.

Allen offers cooking tips as well as advice on selecting fresh vegetables. There is also a how-to guide with basic gardening suggestions for growing the best varieties of produce. If you are new to gardening edibles, you’ll learn that you should consider starting with zucchini (the most “overachieving” of vegetables) and herbs (a windowsill gives you all the space you need).
