Sandhu`s father is a government school teacher, and his name is Jaswinder Singh Sandhu. Her mother`s name is Navdeep Kaur Sandhu, who works in Punjab Agricultural University’s research centre. She has a younger brother, whose name is not known.

  • She has won Gold medal in the 10m Air Pistol sub-youth women category.
  • She also achieved fifth position in the 25m pistol junior women final.

Death

Sandhu committed suicide on 9 December 2021 at her residence in Gali number 4, Harinder Nagar, Faridkot, Punjab. Her parents informed that the reason behind her death was that she was not happy with her performance in the 64th National Shooting Championship that was held in Peru.

Facts/Trivia

  • Before becoming a professional shooter, Sandhu was a swimmer. She had achieved many medals on National level for swimming.
  • In 2017, her father thought that there was not much scope in swimming, so, he asked her to start practicing shooting.

  • After training for almost two years, she won 11 individual medals and seven team medals in the 25m Pistol and 10m Air Pistol events in 2019.

  • Sandu had committed suicide by shooting herself with her licensed .22 pistol in the forehead. She was found dead in the morning on 9 December 2021. Reportedly, she shot herself because she unhappy with her performance in the 64th National Shooting Championship.
  • In the tournament, she had won team medals in the junior civilian women team events, but she could not earn any individual medal. This experience made her sad.

  • In an interview, her parents informed that she came back from Delhi one week before her death. They further added,

    Her performance was not at par during this year’s nationals. However, she did not betray any visible signs of disappointment. Had she shared what she was going through with us, we could have counseled her.”

  • Her parents further informed that she was studying at night on the ground floor on 8 December 2021, while all the other family member were sleeping on the second floor.
  • In an interview, her coach Sukhraj Kaur talked about Sandhu and her behaviour with the team and said,

    She always showed willingness to learn. When we returned from Delhi after the nationals earlier this week, she was bit sad. But we did not know she would take this tragic step. We invite sports psychologists twice a year to counsel our shooters. It’s tragic to see the loss of life of such a talented kid.”

  • The police informed that there was no suicide note found on the place of the incident. They also informed that the investigation would be proceed further under Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC).
  • The SHO of Faridkot City police station, inspector Harjinder Singh, talked about the incident and informed,

    We got a call from the control room about a girl allegedly having shot herself at her residence in Gali number 4 in Faridkot’s Harinder Nagar on Thursday early morning. On reaching there, we found the body of 17-year-old Khush Seerat Kaur Sandhu. She had shot herself with her .22 pistol and died of a headshot wound. According to the family, she was disappointed with her performance in the nationals held in Delhi earlier this week. We have handed the body to the family after autopsy and have launched the investigations.”

  • The former chief minister of Punjab, Captain Amarinder Singh also tweeted about the incident and expressed grief.
