Death
On 15 May 2022, Pallavi Dey was reportedly found dead at her rented flat in Garfa, Kolkata. According to the police, she was found hanging from the ceiling fan of her room. The investigating officer in an official statement said,
The actor was found hanging from a ceiling fan with the help of a bedsheet. The incident took place at about 9:30 am. A case of unnatural death has been registered.”
As soon as the police reached the spot, she was rushed to M. R. Bangur Hospital, Kolkata, where she was declared brought dead. Based on the initial investigation, the police suspect that Pallavi had committed suicide. Talking about it to a media person, the investigating officer said,
Prima facie, it seems that it is a case of suicide. However, the final conclusion can be made only after the post-mortem report is available. We have started an investigation after filing a case of unnatural death.”
Police also questioned Sagnik Chakraborty (Pallavi’s boyfriend) who told the police that he had gone out to buy some cigarettes from the market and on his return, he found that the door was locked from the inside. He broke open the door and found Pallavi’s body hanging from the fan. He immediately informed the police about it.
While police suspected it as a case of suicide, Pallavi’s family alleged that there was a foul play. Talking to a media person, her father, Nilu Dey, said,
Her partner had a registered marriage with someone else two years ago and we came to know about this six months back. There was another girl who he was close to and it would often create trouble in their relationship. We don’t know who saw her hanging.”
They told the police that Chakraborty had forced Pallavi to pay for an apartment they bought in Rajarhat. However, Chakraborty’s mother while denying the allegations said,
The flat in Rajarhat which Pallavi’s parents are claiming was purchased with her money, was bought by us. Pallavi did not contribute anything. We had paid Rs 43 lakh in cash and took a loan to pay the remaining amount.”
Her parents also alleged that Chakraborty was financially dependent on their daughter Pallavi. The two of them had purchased a luxury apartment in New Town worth Rs. 60 lakhs (at the expense of Pallavi Dey).
However, Sagnik’s parents denied all the allegations and said that Pallavi and Sagnik never had any major issues. While speaking to a media person, Sagnik’s mother said,
They used to live together. Although we were not in complete support, we allowed them since they are grown-ups. A few times I had asked Sagnik to stay elsewhere and start living together once they are married. They didn’t have any major issues. I don’t know what happened.”
Later, Pallavi’s father lodged a complaint with the Kolkata police against Sagnik, alleging that he and a woman had killed his daughter. Based on Pallavi’s father’s complaint, Sagnik was called to Garfa police station on 16 May 2022 and was questioned for about 18 hours at the police station. Later, he was arrested for withholding crucial information regarding his employment and his joint financial investments with Dey. According to Atul V., deputy commissioner of police in charge of the south suburban division of Kolkata police, Sagnik Chakraborty was booked under IPC sections related to murder, cheating, criminal breach of trust, criminal conspiracy and dishonest misappropriation of property. He further stated that the arrest was based on a financial fraud committed by Chakraborty. Talking about Chakraborty to a media person, the investigating officer said,
Several inconsistencies have been found in Chakraborty’s statements regarding his work and source of income. We have found that he had closed his Salt Lake office a week before the victim died and is currently jobless. He, however, did not say this when we asked him about his profession.”
Pallavi’s post-mortem report showed no signs of injury and confirmed that the actress had committed suicide.
The news of her demise left her co-stars and fans in a deep shock. Many of her co-stars mourned her death through social media. Her co-star from Mon Mane Na Samm took to his Instagram account to express his pain. He wrote,
