Mohaddesa Jafri was born in 1996 (age 26 years; as of 2022) in Jogeshwari, Mumbai. In 2020, she took admission to a flying school in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Parents & Siblings

Mohaddesa’s father’s name is Sher Mohammad Jafri, who is a preacher at a local masjid. Her mother’s name is Alima Farah Jafri, who also works as a preacher at a local masjid. In an interview, he father talked about her and said,

She is the first Shia girl from Maharashtra to become a commercial pilot. My wife and I are preachers. It is thanks to the blessings of Allah and Hazrat Imam Hussain (grandson of Prophet Muhammad who was martyred in the battle of Karbala in 680 in Iraq) that she can fulfill her dream.”

In an interview, her mother said that they had to hear comments like ‘How could a maulana and alema (female religious scholar) put their only daughter into a pilot’s course?’ from their relatives after she was admitted to the flying school. In an interview, her mother talked about this and said,

We kept quiet as we knew we were not doing anything wrong. If our daughter had a dream and there was nothing irreligious or immoral in it, we had to support her.”

In an interview, she said that she was a big fan of Kalpana Chawla. Recalling the time when she was seven years old, she said that she got to know about Kalpana Chawla in 2013 when she died. In the interview, she further added that she went to market with her father where she saw posters of Kalpana Chawla, and asked her father about her. Her father told her the story about Kalpana Chawla’s bravery after which she became her fan. In the interview, she further said,

I silently became Kalpana Chawla’s fan and as I grew up, I read several biographies and hundreds of articles and watched many videos on her. I told my parents I wanted to join the aviation industry.”
