Aditya Puri is the Managing Director of India’s largest private-sector bank, HDFC Bank. He is the longest-serving head of any private bank in India.

Aditya Puri was born in 1950 (age 70 years; as in 2020) in the Gurdaspur City of Punjab. He gained a bachelor’s degree in Commerce from Panjab University, Chandigarh and qualified as a Chartered Accountant from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India.

Career
Aditya Puri has more than four decades of experience in the banking sector; both in India and other countries. He started his career as a management trainee with Mahindra Ltd in Mumbai. He worked with Citibank for 21 years, and during that period, he worked in 19 countries. In 1992, he became the CEO of Citibank in Malaysia. He returned to India as a managing director of the HDFC Bank in 1994. During his tenure as MD of the HDFC Bank, Aditya led two major mergers in the banking industry, i.e. merger of Times Bank, and Centurion Bank of Punjab with the HDFC Bank. His tenure as the MD of the HDFC Bank ended on 26 October 2020.

Facts
- He likes reading, gardening, and watching TV during his free time.
- His father was an officer in the Indian Air Force.
- While working as a management trainee with Mahindra Ltd. in Mumbai, he lived as a paying guest and paid a rent of Rs 300 per month. He used to get a half cup of tea in the morning and travelled all the way from his PG to Kandivali for work.
- While working in Mumbai, he realised that he did not come to Mumbai to live a life like that. He asked his cousin, who was working at Citibank in Beirut to fix his interview there. He was interviewed at Citibank, and they gave him a job.
- He was in Malaysia when Deepak Parekh, who was running HDFC’s housing company, contacted him and invited him to set up a bank in India. He agreed and returned to India. The bank’s first office was at Sandoz House in Worli and was inaugurated by the then Finance Minister of India, Manmohan Singh.
- Aditya and Deepak Parekh are very close friends since their college days.
