Amol Muzumdar is an Indian cricketer and coach who is regarded as one of the most talented batsmen who never played international cricket for India. He scored more than 10,000 first-class runs in the Indian domestic circuit. He has served as the coach of many teams.

Amol Anil Muzumdar was born on Monday, 11 November 1974 (age 49 years; as of 2023) in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. His zodiac sign is Scorpio. He initially studied at B.P.M High School, Khar, Mumbai and later studied at the Shardashram Vidyamandir International School, Dadar.

He became interested in cricket due to his father and uncles, who used to play cricket at league stages. At the age of ten, his father got him enrolled at the training academy of Ramakant Achrekar, who also trained many other legendary batters such as Sachin Tendulkar, Chandrakant Pandit, Lalchand Rajput, Pravin Amre, and Vinod Kambli. He later became a professional cricketer.

His wife’s name is Ruhee Salvi Muzumdar who works in the share market. The couple has a daughter named Devina Muzumdar who is an artist and studies at the Institute of Fine Arts Academy, Mumbai and Utpal Shanghvi Global School, Mumbai.

Cricketer

Mumbai

He started playing cricket for the Shardashram Vidyamandir International School team during the 1987-88 season. He later played for Bombay Under-15, West Zone Under-15, Bombay Under-16, Bombay Under-19, West Zone Under-16, Star Club of India, Indian Board President’s Under-19s XI, Mohammedan Sporting Club, Cricket Club of India President’s XI, Madras Rubber Factory, Khar Gymkhana, Mumbai Cricket Association President’s XI, Mumbai Cricket Association XI, Abahani Limited, and All India Electricity Board.

He played for around 20 years for different teams such as West Zone, Indian Youth XI, Rest of India, and India Seniors. He made headlines for scoring 260 runs on his first-class debut against Haryana, which was the highest debut score in first-class cricket at that time. He captained Mumbai for various seasons, leading them to win the Ranji title 7 times under his leadership.

Assam

Amol Muzumdar moved to the Assam cricket team in September 2009 and played for them till the 2011 domestic season. He also played for Assam Cricket Association XI while playing in Assam.

Andhra Pradesh

He started playing for the Andhra Pradesh team in October 2011 and played till December 2013. He retired from cricket on 25 October 2014.

India Under-19 & India A

In 1994, he served as the vice-captain of the India Under-19 team. During the 1994-95 season, he played for India A alongside Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly.

England

He played for different teams in England including Tynemouth (2002), Bishop Auckland (2005-07), and Church (2009).

Netherlands

He played for Quick Haag from 2011 to 2013. He could have played for the Dutch national team; however, he became a coach.

Coach

He was appointed as the batting coach of the Netherlands in October 2013 for the 2015 World Cup Qualifier. He worked as the batting coach of the Rajasthan Royals in four IPL seasons from 2018 to 2021.

In September 2019, he became the batting coach of the touring South African team to India. In June 2021, he was appointed as the head coach of the Mumbai team in the Ranji Trophy. He was appointed as the head coach of the national women’s team of India in October 2023.

Facts/Trivia

  • Although he performed consistently in the domestic circuit, he never played for the Indian national team. While many people allege that he was never selected due to his Assamese roots; however, in an interview, he claimed that he could not get a chance to play due to the Fab 4 in the national team during the decade of 2000s which comprised of Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, and VVS Laxman.

  • In 2002, he was considering retirement from cricket as he anticipated that he would not get a call-up for the Indian national team; however, his father asked him to reconsider the decision and sent him to play in the leagues in England. Amol found his passion for the game there and played for around 10 more years.
  • His batting style was right-handed.
  • He has also worked as a commentator and a guest on cricket discussion shows.

  • He revealed in an interview that his favourite cricketer growing up was Sunil Gavaskar. He also regarded Ravi Shastri as a great leader in the interview.

  • When Amol Muzumdar retired in 2014, he held the record for the most runs in the Ranji Trophy before Mumbai batter Wasim Jaffer broke his record.
