Angad Vir Singh Bajwa is an Indian skeet shooter. He made a world record of 60/60 in men’s skeet shooting set at the Asian Shotgun Championship held in Kuwait City (2018).

Angad Vir Singh Bajwa was born on Wednesday, 29 November 1995 (age 25 years; as of 2020) in Chandigarh. His zodiac sign is Sagittarius. He did his schooling at Sherwood College in Nainital, Uttarakhand.

Later, he moved to Canada to pursue his graduation from The University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. However, he left his degree midway and returned to India. He then continued his studies in India and pursued BBA from Manav Rachna University, Chandigarh.

While he was in Canada to pursue his higher studies in 2013, he represented The University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada, in various shooting tournaments.

Career

Angad started practising shooting while he was a teenager. Initially, he did training in pistol shooting, and then he shifted to shotgun shooting because he found pistol shooting quite boring. In 2014, he won the Youngest Canadian Open Champion title. Later, he quit his studies midway in Canada and returned to India as he was not able to focus on his studies. In India, he continued his studies and started training in shooting. He then represented Punjab in various shooting championships. In an interview, he shared how he developed an interest in shooting. He said,

It basically started as a hobby, eight years back. I was always interested in guns and stuff like that. Dad put me up into the game, my interest started to boom and everything else worked out well. It was pretty difficult because I got into a university in Vancouver. I broke the national record there in Canada. Then I had two things. I knew I had to play the sport, but my studies would have been very difficult for my shooting. I couldn’t have done both things at the same time. I took a stand and dad was pretty supportive when I came back. I started doing really well, but it was pretty tough to decide.”

In 2017, he did his training under Vincent Hancock, an American Olympic athlete, to ace his shooting skills. Thereafter, he did his training under the Norwegian shooter Tore Brovold.

In 2018, he made a world record of 60/60 in men’s skeet shooting at the Asian Shotgun Championship held in Kuwait City. In 2019, he became a National Champion at the National Shotgun Championship. He has participated in skeet shooting events like Shooting SK125, Skeet Mixed Team, and Skeet Team Men. His handedness in the game is right, and his master eye is also right. He was selected in the Olympic quota to represent India in skeet shooting at the Tokyo Olympics 2020 which was held in 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

• In an interview, when he was asked how he felt when he was on the podium and the national anthem was played? He replied,

Our national anthem is the best because it’s a different feeling altogether. It’s something else, you get goosebumps. I remember all my podium moments when the flag went up. It’s an unmatched feeling.”

• The legendary Indian actor Amitabh Bachchan in one of his Facebook posts shared that Angad’s father was his classmate in the 1958 class of Sherwood College in Nainital, Uttarakhand. The veteran actor has posted various congratulatory messages for Angad’s success on his Facebook and Twitter account.

• In an interview, he shared how he felt after losing a match in one of the Asian Games competitions. He said,

Missing the final in the Asian Games by two shots hurt a little but then that’s shooting for you. I learnt from the experience and it also helped me understand some flaws in my technique. I worked on my gun swing and training under Brovold sir was more of boosting my mental strength. Training and practice with such shooters make one belief in one’s ability. Talking with national coach Jitinder Beniwal has also helped me. The next quota places for the Tokyo Olympics will be on offer at the World Cup in Mexico next year and my aim will to maintain consistency in the trials and thereafter.”

• During an interview, he shared how he handled pressure before his match. He said,

My coach has told me to remain calm. World Championships are tougher, the Olympics has a lot of hype around it and so I should not put myself under pressure.”

• During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021, he practised skeet shooting at the outdoor range built on his farmhouse in Dera Bassi, Chandigarh. In an interview, he talked about the effect of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020 on his game. He said,

It was a setback initially but then you cannot do anything about it. My coach, who is an Olympic silver medallist from the Beijing Games, really helped me out. He said you will get another year of experience. When the pandemic began, we had a trial going on in Delhi. I finished my trial, went back home and the lockdown was announced. I was lucky that I was at home because I have a gym. My diet was in control, I got my diet and training in order. When the lockdown opened, I trained at my home range in Chandigarh.”
