Asif Basra was born on Thursday, 27 July 1967 (age 53 years; at the time of death), in Amravati, Maharashtra. His zodiac sign is Leo. He did his schooling from Dnyanmata High School in Amravati, Maharashtra. Later, he attended VMV College, Amravati to pursue B.Sc. in Physics.

Career

He was a well-known theatre artist and had performed in various Hindi, English, and Urdu theatre plays, like Hamlet, Merchant of Venice, Oh No! Not Again, Mahatma V/s Gandhi, Tuglak, Kumbh Katha, and Mumtaz Bhai Patangwale. In 1998, he debuted as an actor in the Hindi film ‘Woh’ in which he played the role of a History teacher ‘Omkarnath Dikshit.’ He appeared in various Hindi films, like ‘Parzania’ (2005), ‘Jab We Met’ (2007), ‘Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai’ (2010), ‘Krrish 3’ (2013), ‘Hichki’ (2018), ‘P Se Pyaar F Se Faraar’ (2019). He received critical acclaim for his roles in the Hindi films ‘Black Friday’ (2004) and ‘Parzania’ (2005).

Death

He was found hanging at his leased property in McLeodganj, Upper Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh on 12 November 2020. As per the sources, no suicide note was found at the death scene. Reportedly, he was living with his foreigner friend for past six years.

  • He did not have any formal training in acting. He used to perform in various film festivals in his school and college days.
  • He moved to Mumbai in 1989 to act in college productions. He used to spend all his salary on buying tickets or passes of theatre plays. In 1991, for almost a week, he daily watched the Athol Fugard’s play ‘Boesman and Lena.’
  • He got his break in theatre plays with Salim Ghouse’s production.
  • He resigned from his 9-5 job to continue his career in the Indian theatre.
