Aslam Thambi


Aslam Thambi is a professional Sri Lankan Kabaddi player. He gained popularity in 2022 when he played for the Bengal Warriors team in the 9th season of the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) in India as a raider.


Aslam Saja Mohamed Thambi was born Monday, 21 April 1997 (age 26 years; as of 2023) in Sri Lanka. His zodiac sign is Taurus. Aslam Thambi once mentioned in a media discussion that he was inclined towards kabaddi since childhood. He also shared that he began playing Kabaddi during his school days and used to watch the Pro Kabaddi League on television. He said,

I started from school only. Started winning at the school level, and federation level and the hunger to win kept me close to this game. After I played at the Junior Asian Championships, I became sure that I want to take this sport up seriously.”

International Matches

Aslam Thambi started playing Kabaddi professionally in 2013. Despite the sport being less popular in Sri Lanka than in India, he continued with it. He represented the Lankan Lions at the 2016 Asian Junior Kabaddi Championship in Iran and won a bronze medal, gaining recognition on the global stage. In 2021, as a vice-captain of the Sri Lankan Kabaddi team, he received the Bangabandhu Cup after winning the Bangabandhu Cup Kabaddi tournaments held in Dhaka.

In March 2023, Aslam Thambi won the ‘Man Of The Match’ title during the Sri Lanka vs Chinese Taipei series during the Bangabandhu Cup 2023, an international Kabaddi tournament held in Bangladesh.

Pro Kabaddi League (PKL)

In 2022, the Bengal Warriors team of the Pro Kabaddi League bought him for Rs. 10 Lakhs. In the tenth season of the Pro Kabaddi League in 2023, Aslam Thambi played as a raider for the Bengal Warriors team, coached by Kasinatha Baskaran.

  • In an interview with a media house in 2022, Aslam Thambi expressed his excitement about being in India and witnessing PKL, calling it a dream come true. He said that he started watching the Pro Kabaddi League in 2014 on television. He believed that this experience would allow him to promote and teach the sport more efficiently in his country. He said,

    I hope to go back and tell people that Kabaddi is something where you can build a career. All the learnings I am gathering from India will help me in creating the culture and making Kabaddi a more recognized sport in Sri Lanka.”
