Baby Rani Maurya is an Indian politician who is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). She has been the former governor of Uttarakhand and resigned from her position on 8 September 2021, two years before completing her tenure. She is well-known for being the first woman mayor of Agra.

Baby Rani Maurya was born on Wednesday, 15 August 1956 (age 65 years; as of 2021) in Agra, Uttar Pradesh. Her zodiac sign is Leo. She completed her degree in B.Ed. and M.A. degrees from Agra. After completing her education, she decided to join politics in the early 1990s. After her appointment as the governor of Uttarakhand, she moved to Dehradun.

Baby Rani got married to Pradeep Kumar Maurya, who was working in the Punjab National Bank as a branch manager at that time. He retired from the bank as a director and now works with the advisory board of the bank.

Career

Baby Rani Maurya joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the early 1990s as a general worker from Agra. In 1995, BJP was looking for a family-oriented woman to contest the election for the mayoral seat in Agra. Baby Rani was the perfect candidate for this, and she won the election with a great margin. In 1995, Baby Rani Maurya was appointed as the mayor of Agra for the next five years. In 1997, she was appointed as the treasurer of the scheduled caste (SC) wing of BJP as she belonged to the Dalit caste, and her role was to strengthen the reach of the party to the scheduled caste communities in Uttar Pradesh. The wing was led by Ram Nath Kovind. Baby Rani has been working in the field of human welfare for a very long time, especially the welfare of women and children, and she has focused on the issue of women empowerment.

In 2001, she was appointed as a member of the Uttar Pradesh social welfare board. Further, she became a member of the National Commission for Women in 2002, and she served there till 2005. In 2007, the BJP leaders shortlisted her name to contest the 2007 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly election from the Etmadpur seat in Agra; however, she lost the election to the Bahujan Samaj Party candidate Narayan Singh Suman. After a failed campaign, Baby Rani engaged in state-level responsibilities assigned to her by the party from 2013 to 2015. In 2018, Baby Rani started working with the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights in Uttar Pradesh. On 26 August 2018, Maurya was sworn in as the seventh governor of Uttarakhand by the Indian government. She was the second woman to become the governor of Uttarakhand, after Margaret Alva, who was appointed in 2009. She resigned from the position two years before the end of tenure on 8 September 2021 due to some personal reasons. On 20 September 2021, she was appointed as the national vice president of BJP by BJP president J P Nadda.

  • In an interview, Naveen Jain,  the Mayor of Agra and BJP leader, spoke about Baby Rani Maurya’s work ethics and how she would question the senior-most officials in case of even a single civic issue. Recalling an incident, Naveen Jain said-

    Maurya was highly disciplined party worked and maintained strictness during her tenure as the mayor. She used to take public complaints seriously and would always make officials accountable for them. Once she landed in confrontation with the municipal commissioner, who was not ready to act as per mandate of the house. On this, she got down from her chair and sat on the floor of the house in protest. The matter reached the state government, after which the then district magistrate Durgashankar Mishra had to rush to pacify her.”
