Brett Brown Career In Nike

Brett Brown’s Nike job was his turning point and gained a lot of success from there. He shared his happiness on Instagram which read as, “Just 3 years into my journey at Nike, I am proud to announce that I was recently promoted to a new role as the Director of Immersive Design!

To understand the significance of this accomplishment of becoming a leader at one of the biggest brands in the world, you have to understand where I come from. I remember my family losing our home and having to move to my grandmother’s old house, a house with rotten floors, mildew, and roaches . I remember us struggling to get basic necessities and never really knowing where our next meal was going to come from. Through this, I remember telling myself that I wasn’t going to repeat the cycle of poverty in my family. I remember stocking shelves at Walmart for minimum wage . I remember after being promoted to a manager position at UPS, I was forced to cut my hair or lose my job because my braided hair didn’t look “professional”. I remember all the sacrifice and the countless sleepless nights that I spent learning 3D modeling because I knew that because I wouldn’t have a degree from a prestigious school, my portfolio had to be bulletproof. I remember being laid off from my first real career job at EA and wondering if that was it for me. I remember at my last job in games, leadership questioning my dedication because word got around that I was spending all my free time designing shoes. I remember officially leaving games and moving from Miami to NH to work at Cole Haan knowing it’s a risky career move and also that there will be basically no diversity but being 100% confident I was making the right decision. Turns out I was right because 1.5 years later, I was recruited to join Nike.

Thank you to everyone that has helped me on my journey, you know who you are! My story is proof that no matter how far back you start in the race, you can still win. I’m a black, self taught designer with no college degree who is now a director at Nike, the world leader in footwear. Nothing is impossible! I’m excited to start this new chapter in my career. Onward & Upward .”
