J. J. Watt is the son of Connie and John Watt, both natives of Pewaukee, Wisconsin. He was born on March 22, 1989 in Waukesha County and grew up with his two older brothers Derek and T. J., who also played football at the collegiate level. As a kid growing up in Wisconsin, J. J. was a big Packers fan and worked hard at his sports, playing football, basketball, baseball, and track.
In high school he played tight end and defensive end but received no Division I offers due to his size. He decided to attend Central Michigan University as a preferred walk-on and famously worked out in the weight room for hours each day to improve his strength and size. He earned the Woodland Conference Player of the Year Award his senior year, and first-team All-State, All-County, All-Area.
In addition to this, Watt followed in his father’s footsteps and competed in the shot put during his senior season, earning first-team All-state selection.
