David Lee Biography

David Lee is a former professional basketball player from the United States. He last played in the National Basketball Association for the San Antonio Spurs (NBA). The New York Knicks drafted Lee in the NBA in 2005. With the Golden State Warriors, Lee became a two-time All-Star and an All-NBA Team member, as well as winning an NBA title in 2015. In November of 2017, he announced his retirement.

From 2001 through 2005, David was a member of the University of Florida football team. He was chosen to the All-Southeastern Conference (SEC) freshman team by the conference’s coaches in 2002 as a freshman. In 2002–03, he averaged 11.5 points and 7 rebounds per game as a sophomore. He was a second-team All-SEC pick as a junior in 2003-04, averaging 13 points and 7 rebounds per game.

The Knicks selected Lee with their second first-round choice in the 2005 NBA draft (30th overall). 

On July 1, 2005, he joined the team. For a 13-game streak in December 2005 and January 2006, he was named the starting forward.

Lee was one of the players dropped in the Knicks-Nuggets fight in the 2006-07 season. The NBA did not suspend him since he was not involved in the brawl. On February 16, 2007, he was crowned the Rookie Challenge’s Most Valuable Player after scoring 30 points on 14 of 14 shooting and grabbing 11 rebounds.

With 37 points in the 2008-09 season, he set a new career best.On November 30, 2008, he became the first Knicks player to score 30 points and grab 20 rebounds in a game. After being selected to replace an injured Allen Iverson to represent the East squad in the 2010 NBA All-Star Game on February 11, 2011, he became the first Knick to make the All-Star roster.

On April 2, he had his first career triple double, scoring 37 points, 20 rebounds, and 10 assists against the Golden State Warriors. He became the first player since Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in 1976 to have a game with at least 35 points, 20 rebounds, and ten assists.

David became an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2009-10 season. He’d set career highs in both points per game and assists per game.

On July 9, 2010, he signed with the Golden State Warriors. 

Over the course of six years, the contract earned him $79.54 million. He appeared in 73 games during the 2010–11 season, averaging 16.5 points, 9.8 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 1.01 steals in 36.1 minutes per game.

On February 7, 2012, David earned his second triple-double, scoring 25 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists in a defeat to the Oklahoma City Thunder. On January 24, 2013, he was chosen to the 2013 NBA All-star Game as a reserve for the Western Conference, marking the Warriors’ first All-Star since Latrell Sprewell in 1997.

David Lee retired in November 2017, revealing his decision on Instagram on November 19, 2017. He was a tremendous player in his peak, playing the most of his career with the New York Knicks and the Golden State Warriors, winning All-Star honors with both clubs.
