Michael is currently a professor of Pediatrics & International Child Health at Imperial College. Levin had trained in Medicine in South Africa as well as in pediatrics in the UK. This was just before he specialized in infectious diseases. Levin was a consultant in Infectious Diseases at Great Ormond Street Hospital. He was later appointed as Professor of Pediatrics at Imperial College London in the year 1990.
Most of Levin’s research focused on life-threatening infectious of childhood meningococcal disease, severe respiratory infections, tuberculosis, Kawasaki disease as well as Malaria. As of now, Levin leads the EU funded PERFORM study investigating the application of RNA transcriptions to improve the diagnosis of childhood infection.
Levin recently led an ESPID funded consortium where he studied the genetic basis of meningococcal disease. He is as well a co-investigator on the FEAST trial alongside Professor Maitland. FEAST trial is an MRC funded Phase III trial of fluids as a supportive treatment for critical illness in African children.
Levin has as well led an EU Aid for poverty-related diseases project researching novel diagnostic methods for tuberculosis in Africa. He works with his colleagues in Malawi and South Africa. His research groups cvonti9nue to study pathophysiology as well as life-threatening childhood infections, focusing on meningococcal disease.
His group is applying gene expression profiling as well as proteomic methods to understand the pathophysiology of severe childhood illness. It is as well undertaking genome-wide SNP studies linked to expression studies of meningococcal disease, Kawasaki disease, and tuberculosis.
Professor Levin received an MBE for his services to infectious diseases, critical care, and research in pediatrics in the Queen’s New Year’s honor list in 2017.
