Career
He is a 2013 batch IAS officer of the Tripura cadre. He has served the Tripura government in various capacities like ‘Board of Director of Agartala Smart City Limited,’ ‘Mission Director of National Health Mission, Tripura,’ ‘Executive Secretary of Tripura Health Protection Society (THPS),’ ‘District Election Officer of West Tripura District,’ and ‘District Magistrate of West Tripura.’
While he was serving his duties as the Board of Director of Agartala Smart City Limited, Agartala was ranked at the top among the ten Smart Cities in the North Eastern Region.
He was commended for serving as the Executive Secretary of Tripura Health Protection Society (THPS). In August 2020, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, he was appointed as the District Magistrate of West Tripura.
Disrupting Marriage Ceremonies for Violating COVID-19 Regulations
In April 2021, amid the Coronavirus pandemic, one of his videos went viral on social media in which he was yelling and abusing people for violating the COVID-19 guidelines while he raided two wedding ceremonies in Agartala as the District Magistrate (DM) of West Tripura. One of the marriage venues’ was Manikya Court, a marriage hall at the North Gate of the Palace Compound.
In the video, Dr. Shailesh Kumar Yadav was asking the people to vacate the marriage hall as the Agartala Municipal Council (AMC) had imposed a night curfew starting at 10 pm considering the COVID-19 pandemic. He further ordered to seal the marriage halls and banned them from working as of 26 April 2021. All the guests in both the marriages including bride and groom were booked for violating the Epidemic Diseases Act, Disaster Management Act, along with violating the night curfew guidelines as per Section 144 of the CrPC.
He then recommended the suspension of the officer in charge (OC) of East Agartala police station along with other police personnel who were on-duty on the same day. His act was appreciated as well as criticized by the people. The former Chief Minister of of Tripura Manik Sarkar termed his act as ‘undesired’ and the CPIM demanded strict action against Yadav for his act. The West Tripura MP and BJP leader Pratima Bhowmik in an interview said,
The administration is doing what’s needed to break the chain of transmission of coronavirus. But what happened last night is most undesired. It should not have happened.”
A few BJP MLAs including Sudip Roy Barman, Ashish Kumar Saha, and Sushanta Choudhury demanded Dr. Shailesh Kumar Yadav’s suspension and penned down a letter to the Chief Secretary of Tripura Manoj Kumar. Later, on 28 April 2021, Dr. Shailesh Kumar Yadav apologized for his behaviour after receiving huge criticism on various social media platforms.

One of his videos went viral on social media in April 2021, after he raided two marriage ceremonies in Tripura for allegedly violating the COVID-19 guidelines. He received a mixed reaction from the public on his act. He was criticised for being over strict and using foul language among the public. Various political leaders demanded his removal from the post of District Magistrate (DM) of West Tripura. On 28 April 2021, he apologized for his act after he received criticism from the public.

- Dr. Shailesh Yadav was appreciated by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India in 2018 for getting his sons vaccinated against measles and rubella. The vaccination was a part of the Measles-Rubella (MR) vaccination campaign.
- While serving as the District Election Officer of West Tripura during the COVID-19, he helped in conducting the District Election of West Tripura efficiently in August 2020.
- His work was lauded by the HDFC Bank in August 2020 by posting a YouTube video on their channel in which the bank appreciated Yadav for providing essential items to more than 500 underprivileged residents in West Tripura among the COVID-19 pandemic.
