Life-threatening Obstacles
At the age of 9, Bhargava was diagnosed with Alopecia and Vitiligo. With treatment, his hair regrew and the white patches on his skin started fading. In 2012, he decided to become a doctor just like his father and his grandfather. In January 2016, he suddenly noticed a patch of hair that fell from his head. In an interview, he said,
I rushed to my mother and informed her about it. I was worried. She consoled me and suggested that it could be linked with the stress that I was under while preparing for the final exams,”
In the next 15 days, he lost every strand of hair on his body including his head, hands, legs, and face. In an interview, he recalled,
Seeing my reflection in the mirror became painful and frightening for me. I also started losing my muscle power and could not breathe properly. I could not understand what was happening to me,”
After a thorough examination by the doctors, in April 2016, he was diagnosed with a rare, incurable autoimmune disorder called lupus, which affects multiple parts of the body. He was advised to take high doses of steroids to make him regain his muscle power, and the doctors assured him that the effects of Lupus could be minimized through medicines used to treat cancer; however, this treatment through steroids and cancer medicines further damaged his immune system. As a result, he was forced to take a long leave from his studies. His family advised him to take a gap year and resume once his health allowed him to study regularly, but he continued his college and managed to appear for his final exams. Although he cleared his exams, he knew that he could not practice his profession owing to his health issues. He came across his childhood friends and realized that they too aspire to do something in the food and nutrition space. So he along with his friends started ‘Food Darzee’ in 2017. According to Dr, Sid, the moment he started helping people reach their fitness goals, his health started improving as well. In an interview, he said,
My hair on my head, beard and eyelashes started regrowing. I regained my lost immunity too and looked like a normal human being once again. My whole life was back on track,”
Later, in 2020, he noticed a lymph node on his neck, which grew in size in the next three months. This turned out to be cancer. In an interview, he revealed,
In March 2020, a week before the lockdown was announced, the lymph node turned out to be a Thyroid cancer. Before the situation could have gotten worse, I got admitted into the Tata Cancer Hospital for surgery. I could not believe it was happening all over again,”
After several radiotherapies, post-surgery complications, and bed rest for three months, Bhargava successfully defeated cancer in 2021.
