Götz Haydar Aly is a German journalist, historian and politician. He was the great-grandson of Friedrich Christian (Haydar) Aly, a Turkish convert to Christianity who served as a steward at the Prussian court in the early 1600s. According to family tradition, the middle name of the eldest son is “Haydar”.

Götz Aly Career
After attending the German School of Journalism, Götz studied history and politics in Berlin. As a journalist, she worked for TAZ, Berliner Zeitung and Bundestag Zeitung. In the 1960s and early 1970s the German left-wing student movement published a controversial book “Unser Kampf” 1968: “Ein irritierter Blick zurück” (Fischer TB, Frankfurt/Main 2009). Radical students of the time had more in common with the “1933 generation” than they thought.
Aly received his doctorate in political science from the Freie University of Berlin in 1994, with his research on the Nazi euthanasia of disabled children. He first thought about this issue when his teenage daughter was seriously injured due to meningitis and suffered brain damage.
He was a visiting professor at the Fritz Bauer Institute for Interdisciplinary Holocaust Research in Frankfurt am Main in 2004-2005 and at the School of History of the University of Vienna in 2012-13. He is also a visitor to Yad Vashem.
