Walsh started off his career at Crystal Palace where he won the FA Youth Cup in 1977. His debut game to Chaster City on September 4, 1976, at the age of 18. While playing for Chaster City, he featured as a key member of the side that won the Division Two title in the 1978 -79 season.

In February 1982, he joined Swansea City where palyed for two years at the Vetch Field before leaving following the club’s relegation in 1984. Walsh also played for Barnsley for two years. He as well played for Grimsby Town where he won promotion in his first season.

He also made a goalscoring debut for Wales in September 1979. He defeated England at The Racecourse Ground, Wrexham, back in May 1980. Walsh is currently a commentator and football pundit for BBC Wales. He is also the uncle of Simon Davies, a former Premier League footballer who played for Wales and Fulham.
