Jamyang Tsering Namgyal is an MP from Ladakh. He belongs to the BJP. He came into the limelight after his speech in the Lok Sabha in favour of the revocation of Article 370 and 35A.

Wiki/Biography

Jamyang Tsering Namgyal was born on Sunday, 4 August 1985 (age 34 years; as in 2019) in Matho Village, Ladakh. He received his primary education from the Central Institute of Buddhist Studies, Leh.

He pursued Bachelor of Arts from the University of Jammu. When Jamyang was in college, he was the President of the All Ladakh Student Association (ALSA) for a year.

Jamyang Tsering Namgyal follows Buddhism. His father, Stanzin Dorjey, is a carpenter in the Military Engineering Service. His mother, Ishey Putit, is a homemaker. He comes from a family of farmers. He has a sister, Tsering Lamo. Jamyang got married to Sonam Wangmo on 22 February 2019. Sonam is an assistant professor of a university in J&K.

Career

In 2012, when Jamyang was in college, he joined the BJP. On 1 January 2013, he was appointed as the spokesperson and the state affairs in-charge of the BJP in Ladakh. In 2014, Jamyang was given the responsibility of handling the election campaign of Thupstan Chhewang, the former MP from Ladakh. He handled it successfully, and when Thupstan Chhewang was elected as an MP, Jamyang was appointed as his Personal Secretary.

On 3 November 2015, Jamyang contested the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) elections from the Martselang Constituency. He won with a record margin, and he was elected as the Councillor of the LAHDC. On 1 December 2015, Jamyang was appointed as the Additional Media Secretary of the BJP in Jammu & Kashmir. On 19 June 2018, when the Executive Councillor (Chairman) of the LAHDC resigned, Jamyang was elected as the Chairman of the LAHDC. His popularity had grown a lot by then, and he was elected unopposed. Jamyang was also appointed as the District President of the BJP in Leh.

In 2019, the BJP announced Jamyang’s name as the Lok Sabha candidate from the Ladakh Lok Sabha Constituency. Jamyang campaigned for months. He had two primary promises for the people of Ladakh- Union Territory (UT) status for Ladakh, and the inclusion of the Laddhaki language, Bhoti, in the eighth schedule of the Indian Constitution. As Jamyang had grown from the grassroots level to be the BJP Lok Sabha candidate, he campaigned in the same style. Jamyang went from door to door and explained to the people of Ladakh the benefits of Ladakh being a UT. He won the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections with the largest majority in Ladakh ever in a General Election.

On 17 June 2019, Jamyang Namgyal was sworn-in as a Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha. On 6 August 2019, Jamyang delivered a speech in the Parliament in favour of the revocation of Article 370 and Article 35A. He stated that he supported the decision along with the people of Ladakh. He stated that he wanted to make Ladakh a relevant and prominent UT of India. His speech went viral on the Internet. Reportedly, people on social media said that his speech was great and the way Jamyang spoke for the welfare of the people of Ladakh in a strong stance was admirable. His speech was praised by Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, Smriti Irani, and many more. Narendra Modi also tweeted a link of his speech in the parliament. He praised him, and he also stated that his speech is a must-hear.
