Jonathan Jones Biography
Jonathan Jones a British government lawyer serving as HM Procurator General, Treasury Solicitor, and Head of the Government Legal Service since March 2014. He has also been the Permanent Secretary of the Government Legal Department.
In April 2015, he got to be named the Treasury Solicitors’ Department. On 8 September 2020, it was announced that he had resigned in protest against the government’s reported plans to make changes to the Withdrawal Agreement.

Jones has been serving as HM Procurator General, Treasury Solicitor, and Head of the Government Legal Service since March 2014. He has also been the Permanent Secretary of the Government Legal Department. In 1985, he was called the Bar and served as a legal advisor to the Motor Agents Association for three years before joining the government in the Office for Fair Trading in 1989.
Jones transferred to the Treasury Solicitor’s Department in 1993. In 1998, Jones became deputy legal advisor to HM Treasury. He was promoted to be a director, initially serving as the Legal Director of the Department for Education and Skills. Two years later promoted again to be the Director-General of the Attorney General’s Office. Jones became the Deputy Treasury Solicitor in 2009. Three years later, he moved to the Home Office as their Director-General for Legal Affairs from 2012 until 2014.
Jones was appointed the Treasury Solicitor on March 1, 2014, replacing Sir Paul Jenkins on his retirement. In April 2015, he was named the Treasury Solicitors’ Department. Jones was appointed Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB) in the 2020 New Year Honours for public service. On 8 September 2020, it was announced that he had resigned in protest against the government’s reported plans to make changes to the Withdrawal Agreement.
