He says his time behind the mic helped prepare him for work in front of the camera . In 1990 , during the Loma Prieta earthquake of ’89 , He was awarded the prestigious George Foster Peabody award for his contributions to KCBS Radio .

He hosted HGTV ‘s Landscape Smart for four seasons , where he directed homeowners attempting to improve their curb appeal . He was asked to send 16 pages of the copy that producers said they had sent to his home for him to memorize when he turned up for the audition . He didn’t get them , so he winged them and got the work .

In 1990, Ken joined KPIX 5 . His long stay made him one of the Bay Area’s most trusted Bay Area broadcast journalists . Ken has won several prizes, including six local Emmys. He was awarded for his outstanding achievement in continuing coverage for his film , Inside the Middle East. For his outstanding work as an anchor and reporter , he has also received 15 Emmy awards from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences . In addition , the Associated Press , the Radio and Television News Directors Association , and the Peninsula Press Club have praised Ken for excellence .

He had the luxury of traveling around the world , often while on assignment for KPIX 5 . His voyage to the Middle East covering the Intifada and the development of Israel’s separation barrier in East Jerusalem and the West Bank are Ken’s most unforgettable reporting trips. He covered Hurricane Iniki in 1988 , Hawaii’s most powerful hurricane to hit in recorded history. When it was declared a National Park Preserve , Ken even traveled to the Mojave Desert .

During major news events , Ken has proved to be a steady presence . As well as special coverage of the San Bruno gas explosion and the Oakland Ghost Ship crash, he anchored KPIX 5 ‘s extended live coverage on September 11th . He also co-anchored the station’s coverage of the parades of the Giants World Series and anchored live in the days leading up to Super Bowl 50 in Santa Clara from San Francisco’s Super Bowl Area .
