Kumar Eswaran is a mathematical physicist who became famous after he claimed to have found the solution to the 161 years old Reimann hypothesis. The hypothesis is considered the most important of the top ten unsolved mathematical problems.
Wiki/Biography
Kumar Eswaran was born in 1947 (age 74 years; as of 2021) in Pune, Maharashtra. After completing his schooling and graduation, Kumar Eswaran attended the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, to pursue M.Sc. in Physics. In September 1968, he joined the University of Madras, Chennai, as a researcher, and in June 1973, he completed his PhD in Theoretical Physics.

Career
After completing his PhD in Theoretical Physics from the University of Madras, Kumar joined the research and development division of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), New Delhi, as the additional general manager. In 1981, Kumar went to Ohio State University to conduct research in the area of wave scattering and propagation. He worked at BHEL till 1999 and then joined the Department of Computer Science and Engineering in Sreenidhi Institute of Science and Technology (SNIST), Hyderabad, as a professor. He is the CEO of Altech Power and Energy Systems Private Limited (ALPES). The company works in the field of power plant engineering, advanced computing techniques, monitoring, and system modelling.
The Riemann Hypothesis Solution
In 2000, the Riemann Hypothesis, a mathematical problem, was considered a millennium problem by the Clay Mathematics Institute of Cambridge. This 161-year-old problem came with a reward prize of $1 million for anyone who would give the solution to this problem. The hypothesis helps in counting the prime numbers and gives a method by which we can generate large random numbers. In 2016, Kumar Eswaran posted his research titled ‘The final and exhaustive proof of the Riemann Hypothesis from the first principle.’ The file was downloaded thousands of times on the internet, and in February 2020, an expert committee of eight mathematicians was formed to study the proof given by Kumar Eswaran. Professor M Seetharaman was a part of the committee, and Seetharaman earlier worked with the Department of Theoretical Physics at the University of Madras. After reviewing the RH proof given by Kumar Eswaran, the professor said-
The author’s analysis is exhaustive, unambiguous and every step in the analysis is explained in great detail and established. The conclusions of the author and his result must therefore be considered proven.
The hypothesis is very important for many mathematicians as the proof of RH would automatically solve several problems and theorems that are dependent on this hypothesis.
Facts/Trivia
- After his successful research regarding the hypothesis, Kumar Eswaran was invited to several universities to give guest lectures about his research.
- The field of interest of Kumar Eswaran is AI, neural networks, and other mathematical areas.
- Kumar Eswaran is fond of poetry, and he has also written a poetry book titled ‘Strands of Verse.’
- During an interview, Kumar Eswaran talked about his work and justified it by saying that-
While one can easily count the number of prime numbers from say 1 to 20, it becomes a tedious task to calculate the number of prime numbers till one million or 10 billion. The hypothesis was important to prove as it would enable mathematicians to exactly count prime numbers.”
