Stokes sratred off her career as a journalist in 1986 at WCIA in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois where she worked as a medical reporter and later on as a weekend co-anchor. She then joined WBTV in Charlotte, North Carolina back in 1988 working as a reporter and weekend anchor for two years and moved on to join WBFF-TV, the Fox Station in Baltimore as a crime and street reporter.
She then orked at WJLA-TV as a lead female anchor of the 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. newscasts, and at MSNBC.

Stokes began working for Fox-5 WNYW back on October 4, 2017, as a co-host of Good Day New York with Rosanna Scotto. She replaced
Greg Kelly who had left the station. Previously she worked for 17 years at WABC-TV and then joined the station in the year 2000 as a co-anchor of Eyewitness News This Morning together with Robb Hanrahan. The pair managed to bring the show to position 1.
The duo later went on to anchor Eyewitness News at Noon, replacing Nancy Loo and David Ushery. She got eventually paired with Ken Rosato and the together worked as the morning and noon co-anchors. She left left the station in August 2017.
