Lt Gen R. C. Tiwari


R. C. Tiwari is a three-star general of the Indian Army who has held various command positions in the army. He hit the headlines in December 2023 following his appointment as the General Officer Commander (GOC) of the Eastern Command of the Indian Army.


Ram Chander Tiwari was born in India. After completing his schooling, Tiwari joined the National Defence Academy (NDA) in Khadakwasla, Pune, Maharashtra. There, he underwent a military training module for three years. Thereafter, he joined the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun, Uttar Pradesh (now in Uttarakhand), where he underwent training for a year. He completed his training in 1987. R. C. Tiwari is an alumnus of the Defence Services Staff College (DSSC) in Wellington. There, he earned a master’s degree in strategic studies. He then earned a master’s degree in philosophy in National Security and Strategic Study at the National Defence College (NDC) in New Delhi. He has also undergone a defence management course at the College of Defence Management (CDM) in Secunderabad, Telangana.

After completing his military training in 1987, Ram Chander Tiwari was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Kumaon Regiment. Soon after commissioning, he went to Belgaum, Karnataka, where he underwent basic military courses. He took over the command of a company of his battalion as a major. Thereafter, he reported at Mhow, Madhya Pradesh, where he did a Junior Command (JC) course. He served as a Second-in-Command, also known as 2IC, of his battalion as a lieutenant colonel. As a colonel, he commanded a Rashtriya Rifles battalion in the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir. Under his command, the battalion played a crucial role in combating militancy in Kashmir. He took over the command of a frontline high-altitude brigade of the Indian Army after getting promoted to brigadier. He then went on to serve in the United Nations (UN). As a major general, he served as General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 17th Infantry Division, popularly known as the Black Cat Division, in Gangtok.

He later became a lieutenant general. On 1 March 2022, Tiwari became the commander of the Kohima-based 3 Corps, also known as the Spear Corps. He replaced Lt Gen Johnson P. Mathew and served in the post till 6 March 2023.

He was later appointed as the chief of staff of the Jaipur-headquartered South Western Command of the Indian Army. After completing his tenure there, he was appointed as the commander of the Uttar Bharat Area.

On 1 January 2024, R. C. Tiwari took over the command of the Kolkata-based Eastern Command from Lt Gen R. P. Kalita.
