A Twitter account named @BabuBongo shared an audio clip of their call. In a tweet, Madhuri and her husband denied the blame and said that the audio was fake. He wrote,
Folks. Chill. It’s a fake audio by some scamster trying to extort funds (USD 240,000 bitcoins). I refused to buckle. I’ve got more character. And, internet has got enough scamsters.”
Later, the bank stated that Madhuri and Ashneer abused their employee because they were not granted shares of Rs. 500 crore by the bank during the launch of Nykaa’s IPO in 2021.
FIR in a fraud case
On 10 May 2023, a case was registered against Madhuri Jain Grover, her husband, Ashneer Grover, and family members Deepak Gupta, Suresh Jain, and Shwetank Jain by the Delhi Police’s Economic Offences Wing (EOW) after a complaint by BharatPe for an alleged Rs. 81 crore fraud in December 2022. They were booked under eight sections of serious cognisable criminal offences, including 409 (criminal breach of trust by public servant, banker, merchant, or agent), 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 467 (forgery of valuable security, will, etc.), and 120B (criminal conspiracy). In a November 2023 investigation conducted by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Delhi Police, it was discovered that Ashneer Grover and his family members utilized backdated invoices to divert funds for work they never performed for the fintech unicorn. On 16 November 2023, Madhuri and Ashneer were stopped at Terminal 3 of the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Delhi Police. According to Ashneer, he was travelling to the United States with Madhuri when officials stopped them from travelling on the basis of the Look out Circular (LoC), which was issued against them earlier in the same month. Ashneer later addressed the matter through a post on X in which he mentioned that he had not received any summon or LoC notice. He further added that he became aware of the LoC seven hours after returning home from the airport.
Facts/Trivia
- Madhuri’s hobbies include travelling and baking.
- In an interview, she talked about why she worked in her husband’s company in 2018 and said,
I could sense that Ashneer and BharatPe needed help. Since I was running my business more on the model of a walk-in studio, which isn’t a day-long job, I suggested that I could help. And when I joined, I could feel how the company needed someone senior who can take charge of various internal functions.”
- According to her, when they started the company, her children helped them in pasting posters for the promotion of the app. In an interview, she said,
My children, especially the elder one, completely feels the pulse of it. There have been times when my children and I have pasted BharatPe stickers at the merchant outlets. It so happened that recently when at one such restaurant where my son had pasted it, he didn’t see it next time we visited it. He not just observed it but also urged me to check on why it wasn’t there. He had several questions – who would have taken it out and why. I guess in their own ways they also feel connected to BharatPe and are proud of it.”
- She likes to work out at the gym, and she often posts photos of her gym sessions on social media.
