Monica Patel is an Indian cricketer who is known for being selected for the Gujarat Giants team for the Women’s Premier League (cricket) in 2023. She is a left-hand batsman and left-arm medium pacer.

Monica Chhelaram Patel was born on Monday, 26 April 1999 (age 24 years; as of 2023) in Bangalore, Karnataka. Her zodiac sign is Taurus. She was born into a Rajasthani family and moved to Banglore with her family when she was young. When she was a child, she started playing cricket with her brother in their colony. She used to always bat and never liked bowling. When her neighbours saw her skills, they suggested her family to provide her with professional training. She started training at a local cricket club and on her first day at the club, she took the wicket of a senior and received a lot of appreciation from her coach. Her coach suggested she become a bowler, but she clearly told him that she wanted to do batting. Later, he asked her to try everything a become an all-rounder.

Domestic Cricket

She was a part of the Karnataka Women’s Team before making an international debut. She bagged six wickets in the 2018-2019 Senior One-day tournament. In 2019, she bagged four wickets in the same tournament, but she returned home amid the tournament because it was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In January 2021, she played the Falcons Sports Club golden jubilee T-20 tournament where she bagged three wickets.

International Cricket

In March 2021, she got a call that she was selected for the Indian squad for the series against South Africa. She made her ODI debut on 7 March 2021 against South Africa at Lucknow. On 13 February 2023, Gujarat Giants bought her for Rs. 30 lakhs in WPL Auction 2023. The Women’s Premier League will start on 4 March 2023 at the DY Patil Stadium and the first match will be between Gujarat Giants and Mumbai Indians.

  • In an interview, she said that she did not play cricket seriously until she made her under-19 debut in the Karnataka team.
  • In 2015, when she was part of the U-19 team, she was not on the playing squad because there were other bowlers in the team who were better performers than her.
  • In an interview, she talked about being a left-arm pacer and said,

    We have an advantage with different angles, bringing the ball into the right hander. There are very few left-arm pacers around the world. I don’t feel any lucky there, but there is always an advantage in this sense.”

    There are many seniors in the squad. I want to learn from them, gain experience, which will help me grow as a cricketer. But yes, whenever I get an opportunity, I want to deliver, make sure that I bowl fast and also give my best.”

In the first match, she bowled four overs and gave twenty runs, because of which she was not part of the team during the next three matches. She played the final match and gave a better performance.
