Shortly after Moraya Wilson won the title of Miss Universe Australia 2023, reports surfaced revealing that her parents, Anton and Melinda Wilson, operated several businesses and became bankrupt property developers after leaving creditors with debts exceeding $45 million. The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) banned Anton from managing corporations until 2027, while his ex-wife, Melinda Wilson, was disqualified for five years, with debts amounting to $39 million. Moraya Wilson also faced allegations of being a director of 10 companies with outstanding thousands of dollars in tax payments as of 2 September 2023, just a day after winning the Australian crown in Melbourne; however, she denied any knowledge or involvement in these businesses. A Change.org petition urged her to step down from the Miss Universe 2023 pageant and garnered 472 signatures out of the intended goal of 500. The petition mentioned,

What Miss Wilson has taken from people’s future to build a home does not encourage other women to push the limits of what’s possible but rather impairs their capacity to forge a better future.”
