Career

Naila made her acting debut in 2015 with the Indian romantic comedy-drama film ‘Tamasha,’ directed by Imtiaz Ali. She was casted along with Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Piyush Mishra, Javed Sheikh, and Tiger Shroff in the film. With her debut under a well-known banner, Naila received a lot of attention. The critics lauded her acting abilities. When asked about her motivation for becoming an actress during the film’s promotion, she said,

My earliest memory is of being completely enchanted by the moving display of a television screen, the sound of music, and being transported by stories. I really believe that it is in these earliest experiences that we catch a glimpse into our future. As I negotiated my future, it is on stage that I found myself flourish – whether it be through dance or theatre. It has always been my natural habitat, a feeling akin to returning “home”. I was extremely lucky to have the privilege to study theatre at school. This was my first experience with all things acting and performance. My first stint with the camera came later when I happened to work with the famed director, Imtiaz Ali in Tamasha (2015). A great first step!”

In 2017, the actress starred in the film ‘Bareilly Ki Barfi,’ in which she played the role of Babli. The romantic comedy film directed by Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari was based on Nicolas Barreau’s novel “The Ingredients of Love.” Naila appeared alongside Kriti Sanon, Ayushmann Khurrana, Rajkummar Rao, Pankaj Tripathi, and Seema Pahwa. Critics complimented Bareilly Ki Barfi for its pleasant and straightforward plot, music, and cast performances, particularly Rao’s portrayal. In 2020, she featured alongside Sunny Kaushal and Rukshar Dhillon in the Sneha Taurani directed Indian Hindi-language comedy-drama film ‘Bhangra Paa Le,’ in which she played the character Heer. The film was released in theatres on 3 January 2020. Apart from appearing in films, the actress has also acted in commercials for brands such as Lakme, Phillips, Platinum, and Hyundai, to name a few. She explained her acting journey saying,

Acting and being immersed in the craft is my greatest joy. Each day, I thrive to come closer to refining my skills, ideas and approaches as an actor and performer. Each day is a step closer. While it isn’t an easy journey for anyone, building a body of work comes with its share of challenges for someone outside of the industry. I believe every attempt however big or small is infinitely more rewarding than waiting for destiny to unfold. I have gotten an opportunity to work with some of the greatest talents from the industry. It has helped me grow as an actor and expand my perspective. I wish to continue to find meaningful opportunities across genres in the coming time.”

Naila Grewal declared her involvement in the second sequel of Shahid Kapoor and Amrita Rao‘s 2003 college romance film Ishq Vishq in 2022. Sharing her excitement to star in the film, Naila shared,

l believe in love. When relationships can be found on apps, and lost over a chat, you know that love needs an upgrade. ISHQ VISHK REBOUND. It’s time to move on. We believe in love! ❤️💥

Ishq Vishk literally captures the charm of young love in the early 2000’s. Had you told me then that 19 years later, I’ll be here, a part of this incredible team, I would have chuckled in disbelief. I am hugely grateful for this opportunity to recreate the magic and love that @shahidkapoor , @amrita_rao_insta and @shenaztreasury made us fall in love with!!.”

Facts/Trivia

  • Naila Grewal is highly praised for her skin by her followers on her social media accounts. Sharing about her skincare routine, she said,

Less is more. My skincare routine is very simple. I cleanse with a cleanser suited to my skin type and layer up with a good moisturiser and sunscreen. At the end of the day, I repeat this minus the sunscreen and the addition of another deep cleanser to remove makeup residue. Using the right products for your skin is important as is keeping it simple!”

  • The actress is a health and fitness fanatic. By sharing her own experience, she also motivates her admirers and followers to live a healthy lifestyle. When asked about her workout routine, she explained,

My approach to fitness is one that is holistic and kind on my body. It all starts with a balanced diet and ample hydration. Coupled with this, I dabble with different forms of exercise responding to what my mind and body wants. This could be yoga, Pilates, weight training or my absolute go to- Dance! There’s nothing quite like a fulfilling, intense dance session.”

  • Earlier in 2022, the government declared that OTT platforms’ content would be regulated. She stated her thoughts on the matter as follows,

Art is a reflection of society but also a source of informing and guiding society. It is important for the arts to be free such as to bring about change and develop the way people think. With that said, perhaps the onus of content should lie with the organizations running OTT platforms to have a set of approved guidelines that are generic, fair, and liberal. This way, all content is measured against the same yardstick, without only a specific type of content being considered problematic. The arts flourish in an open-minded and free environment, so regulations must not encroach this.”
