Nandre Burger was born on Friday, 11 August 1995 (age 28 years; as of 2023) in Krugersdorp, Gauteng, South Africa. His zodiac sign is Leo. His introduction to cricket was through casual games with makeshift wooden sticks and foil paper balls, playing with his mother and granny. Before joining the University of the Witwatersrand (WITS), Johannesburg, he had some experience playing club cricket. He pursued a degree in sports psychology at the WITS. At WITS, his coach Neil Levenson discovered his talent for pace bowling.

Domestic

On 11 February 2016, he made his first-class debut for Gauteng in a match against South Western Districts at Recreation Ground, Oudtshoorn in the 2015–16 Sunfoil 3-Day Cup.

On 14 February 2016, he made his T20 debut against South Western Districts at Recreation Ground, Oudtshoorn in the CSA Provincial T20 Challenge. He made his List A debut for Gauteng in a match against North West at Senwes Park, Potchefstroom in the 2016–17 CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge on 26 February 2017. He emerged as the top wicket-taker in the 2017–18 CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge competition for Gauteng, securing 19 dismissals in seven matches. In July 2018, he was named in the Cricket South Africa Emerging Squad. In the same year, he played for Cape Town Blitz.

Playing for Gauteng, he emerged as the leading wicket-taker in the 2018 Africa T20 Cup, with eleven dismissals in six matches. In September 2019, he was selected to join the Nelson Mandela Bay Giants squad for the 2019 Mzansi Super League competition.

In April 2021, he was named in Western Province’s squad for the 2021–22 cricket season in South Africa. Apart from that, he has played for Lions (2017/18–2018/19), Cape Cobras (2019/20–2020/21), and Joburg Super Kings (2023).

On 14 December 2023, he made his T20I debut for South Africa against India at The Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg during India’s tour of South Africa 2023/24. On 17 December 2023, he made his ODI debut against India at The Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg during India’s tour of South Africa 2023/24. He gave an impressive performance picking 3 wickets in the 2nd ODI. On 26 December 2023, he made his Test debut against India at The Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg during India’s tour of South Africa 2023/24. His fiery four-wicket haul led South Africa to a win over India in the first Test. Burger picked up seven wickets on his Test debut, making a remarkable entrance into his Test career by taking 2 wickets within the initial 13 deliveries.

  • Interestingly, Burger didn’t want to become a professional cricketer. The sport for him had been more of a pastime at WITS. In fact, at 17, he was about to quit cricket for tennis. However, he started developing back spasms due to which he was forced to quit the racquet sport. After his short romance with Tennis, he started playing club cricket. Additionally, his career has been marked by a series of injuries, including a notable period of absence lasting almost a year from October 2021 to October 2022 due to a lumbar stress fracture.
