Nina Singh is an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the 1989 batch of the Rajasthan cadre. She has held important posts in various central government organisations such as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). She is also the first woman IPS officer to be allotted the Rajasthan cadre. She hit the headlines in December 2023 after she became the first woman to be appointed as the Director General (DG) of the CISF.

Nina Singh, known as Nina Rani before marriage, was born on Saturday, 11 July 1964 (age 59 years; as of 2023) in Darbhanga, Bihar, India. Her zodiac sign is Cancer. After completing her schooling in Bihar, she enrolled at Patna Women’s College, where she did her graduation with a B.A. She then joined the Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi, where she did her M.A. Following the completion of her M.A., Nina joined the Delhi School of Economics where she pursued a master’s degree in philosophy. However, she left the MPhil studies in between as she joined the police force. Thereafter, Nina appeared for the UPSC civil services examination and managed to clear it. Thereafter, she reported at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA) in Hyderabad, Telangana, where she underwent a police training module. After becoming an IPS officer, she did her Master in Public Administration (MPA) at the Harvard Kennedy School. Later, she earned a degree in the evaluation of social programs at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA.

Parents & Siblings
Her father, Ganesh Lal Das (deceased), served in the Bihar government as an ADG. Her mother was a civil servant as well. She has three brothers and three sisters. She is the eldest among them.
Husband & Children
Her husband, Rohit Kumar Singh, is a 1989-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer. He has served in the Consumer Affairs Ministry in the central government.
Career
Nina was initially allotted the Manipur cadre on 21 August 1989. She went on to hold many posts in the Manipur cadre. Following her marriage to Rohit Kumar Singh, she was transferred to the Rajasthan cadre becoming the first woman IPS officer to be allotted the Rajasthan cadre.
In 1995, she became the first woman to become the police chief of the Rajasthan police; she remained in the post till 1996. She went on to serve as the Inspector General of Police (Planning and Welfare) in Rajasthan. In 2000, she introduced a creative outreach initiative as the secretary of the Rajasthan State Women’s Commission. This program aimed to support women facing difficulties by organising hearings in various districts and providing them with a platform to voice their concerns. In Rajasthan, she has held many important posts such as Additional Director General (Training) and Director General of Civil Rights & Anti-Human Trafficking. In 2013, she was posted to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) as a joint director. There, she worked on numerous important and sensational cases such as the Sheena Bora murder case, the PNB Scam case, the Nirav Modi case, and the Jiah Khan suicide case. She served in the CBI till 2018. She has also held the post of Inspector General of the Ajmer range and the Deputy Inspector General of the Jaipur range. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she was appointed as the Principal Secretary (Health) in Rajasthan. After that, she was appointed as the Special Director General of the CISF. She went on to hold important posts in CISF, including that of the Additional Director General (ADG) and Director General-in-Charge (DG-in-C).
Later, she became the acting Director General of the Rajasthan Police, and thereafter, she was appointed as the Director General of the Rajasthan Police. On 28 December 2023, she took over as the Director General (DG) of the CISF. According to the gazette notification of the Government of India, she will hold the post till her retirement on 31 July 2024. The official statement of the CISF read,

Salary
As per the 7th Central Pay Commission (CPC), Nina Singh receives Rs. 2,25,000 + other allowances as the Director General (DG) of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).

- She has worked with Nobel laureates Abhijit Banerjee and Esther Duflo on two research papers addressing reforms and improvement of police effectiveness within a system at Harvard. The papers highlighted the Rajasthan Police as examples.
